Americans United for Change ad: “GOP Rx”

H/t huffingtonpost.com for Obama Ally Slams GOP, Health Insurance CEO In New Ad:

Americans United for Change, a group that supports President Obama's plans to overhaul the health care system, released a new television advertisement on Monday, lumping together Republicans and health insurance executives as allied forces trying to derail reform.

Tilted "GOP Rx," the ad goes after one of those executives in particular: Cigna CEO Ed Hanway, for earning a reported $73 million golden parachute upon retirement.

"Ed makes more in one day, than the average worker makes all year long," the script reads. "Now Ed's retiring with a seventy-three-million-dollar golden parachute. The Republican prescription for the health insurance crisis — be as rich as Ed … you'll be happy too."

The spot pushes the same strategy that Democrats in Congress — particularly House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, (D-Calif.) — have been following for the past week: Make health insurance companies the villain and denounce Republicans for upholding the status quo. It's reminiscent of how Wall Street executives served as foils during the debate over Obama's stimulus and budget packages.

The spot will begin airing nationally tomorrow .

  1. My cure for everything political is to get the big money out of politics. When I read the amounts of money given to a number of representatives and Senators in the hope of influencing their vote on issues – the hottest one right now is, of course, health care – well, frankly, I could throw up! This is what needs to be changed! Then, perhaps, our representatives could concentrate on the issues and what their constituents want them to do. I think it is hard for them to concentrate on facts and constituents wishes when huge checks are being dangled in front of their faces and it takes immoral sums of money to elected and re-elected.

  2. Exurban Jon is right about this in so far as the real people holding things up are conservative democrats.

  3. This is hilarious. Dems own the White House, House of Reps and have a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. Every person holding back Obamacare has a “D” after their name.

I know the GOP served as a great group of bogeymen (even for us conservatives!), but they’re irrelevant to the debate now. If Democrats actually want to exploit their huge majorities, they better start leading and stop whining.

It’s all on you now, and every voter knows it.

  4. This is actually one of the better ads I’ve seen, but while I enjoy seeing Republicans get called on their hate towards American working people, they are pretty damn irrelevant to the health care issue. These ads should be running against Ben Nelson, Evan Bayh, and the Wal-Mart twins down in Arkansas.
