This engrossing documentary takes us inside the legendary Studio Ghibli, the renowned Japanese animation studio that created such classics as Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro.

Granted near-unfettered access to the notoriously insular Studio Ghibli, director Mami Sunada follows the three men who are the lifeblood of Ghibli – the eminent director Hayao Miyazaki, the producer Toshio Suzuki, and the elusive and influential “other director” Isao Takahata – over the course of a year as the studio rushes to complete two films, Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises and Takahata’s The Tale of The Princess Kaguya. The result is a rare “fly on the wall” glimpse of the inner workings of one of the world’s most celebrated animation studios, and an insight into the dreams, passion and singular dedication of these remarkable creators. (Dir. by Mami Sumada, 2014, Japan, in Japanese with subtitles, 118 mins., Not Rated)

  1. About 25 people there to see the opening of this film about Japanese animation, mostly about the legendary Hayao Miyazaki and his creative genius and meticulous artistry. Good to follow his daily routine as he created his last film “The Wind Rises” for Stubio Ghibli (invented word, pronounced Jib-lee). Lesser emphasis on partner/producer Suzuki and the elusive Takahata. Miyazaki ponders the concept of personal happiness and why he does what he did (create fantasy through animation). Playing at least for one week at the Loft.
