Guns in America: Where Do We Go From Here community forum

at Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway Blvd. on Monday Feb. 26, 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

“In the aftermath of yet another school shooting – this one taking 17 lives – please join Ward 6 Tucson City Council member Steve Kozachik for what is sadly a timely, and yet necessary renewed conversation about gun control in America. Kozachik, along with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense have invited U.K. photojournalist Jamie Hunter to come and share his thoughts. Hunter visited multiple locations around the U.S. documenting all sides of the gun control issue. His presentation is titled “Guns in America – where do you go from here?” Following Hunter’s photo presentation we will open the forum for questions and comments from the audience. The event is free and open to all.”

  1. Almost full house tonight to hear atty. Jamie Hunter from Scotland talk about his photo project. He travelled throughout America in summer 2016 after the Orlando shooting to talk to people in Chicago, Texas, Florida and DC. He interviewed & photographed both survivors and gun owners. The U.K. has stricter gun standard and ownership laws than US. Jamie said “people are the problem” but there are too many guns and easy access to them in US, that we need to vote for change. Present tonight were Pima County Attorney Barbara LaWall, CD 2 candidate Mary Matiella, survivors Pam Simon, Pat Maisch (whose photo is in Jamie’s show). Questions from audience were about whether the 104,000 shootings/year in US were accidental or purposeful; why gun culture different in US than UK; about gun ban in Scotland after 1996 shooting there; any effect of violent movies/video games on males in our culture; does education in UK focus on wars; how did Jamie get started in this project; aren’t gun owners wary of having their guns confiscated; isn’t the common good not to see more deaths; who are the victims of gun violence in US; and final statement about going after NRA with not supporting companies that have a relationship w/ them– from a friend of Roxanna Green (whose daughter died in the Tucson shooting).
