Not from ‘The Onion’: Cap’n Al Melvin exploring running for governor

I almost spit out my coffee when I read this headline — I thought I was reading the satirical "The Onion," but nope, it is the Arizona Capitol Times (subscription required). Al Melvin exploring campaign for governor:

Sen. Al Melvin, R-SaddleBrooke, has formed an exploratory committee to run for governor.

In a press release posted on the blog Sonoran Alliance, the
three-term senator said his motivation for exploring the race sprang
from his frustration with a lack of progress at the Capitol and “genuine
optimism” for Arizona’s future.

“We have been blessed with some hard-working reform-minded
legislatures during my time here, but we have failed to make the kind of
progress that the people of Arizona deserve because too many elected
officials are content to think small and act small,” Melvin said in the
press release.

Melvin scheduled a press conference for today to discuss his 2014 plans.

Wow! Talk about cognitive dissonance. Just how out of touch with reality is this guy? As I have said many times before, we need to have mental competency exams for politicians. New Rule: Mental Competency Exams for Politicians.

UPDATE: Here is a link to his exploratory committee filing with the Secretary of State. MELVIN, AL.

UPDATE: The Arizona Republic. Arizona senator testing support for governor bid. The Arizona Daily Star. State Sen. Al Melvin to run for Arizona governor.. And Dan Gibson at the Tucson Weekly. Al Melvin Considering a Run for Governor:

I personally could not be more excited by his move to form an exploratory committee to run for governor.

First of all, we would have an answer to the question "After Brewer, it couldn't really get worse, could it?"

Secondly, while Melvin would probably find a way to appoint his old buddy Russell Pearce to a state office and Arizona as we know it would likely collapse if he managed to win, as an alt-weekly editor, there'd be an endless source of editorial material.

Not funny, Dan.
