Star gazing at Historic Canoa Ranch (canceled)

Please note cancelation of tonight’s stargazing event at Canoa Ranch in Green Valley due to cloudy skies.

A second stargazing event set for Saturday, Sept. 19, at Agua Caliente Park, 12325 E. Roger Road, is still on, but visitors should call 520-615-7855 if they are unsure about weather conditions. A recorded message will let them know if the event has been canceled.

“Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation is hosting two stargazing events Sept. 18-19 at the Historic Hacienda de la Canoa in Green Valley and at Tucson’s Agua Caliente Park, respectively.

Both events will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. and are free and open to the public.

At the Sept. 18 Canoa Ranch event, volunteers from the Sonora Astronomical Society will help visitors use telescopes for their celestial viewing and offer an educational introduction to the night sky.

At the Sept. 19 event at Agua Caliente, 12325 E. Roger Road, volunteers from the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association will help visitors use telescopes for their celestial viewing and offer an educational introduction to the night sky.

Although the stargazing doesn’t start until 7 p.m., participants can come to Canoa Ranch at 6 p.m. to enjoy a self-guided tour of the Historic Hacienda de la Canoa headquarters before stargazing. Docents will be on hand to share the fascinating stories of the people who lived and worked on the ranch.

Flashlights are recommended for after-dark walking and visitors can bring lawn chairs if they would like.
