Star headline: “Budget saved.” “Boehner applauded”

by David Safier

The Star's Creative Headline Writers twisted themselves into a pretzel to come up with their headline about the last minute budget deal, making the Republicans look like heroes, with Boehner as the Savior.

Budget saved in 11th-hour deal

Saved? Saved from what? The budget deal stopped a government shutdown. So far as I know, there was no salvation involved.

And who gets the credit from the Star? It's in the subhead:

$38 BILLION SLASHED; BOEHNER APPLAUDED; ABORTION FUNDING IN DC AREA AMONG CONTROVERSIAL SACRIFICES

Boehner did it! He did it! He saved the budget! He slashed $38 Billion! All America is grateful!

Here are some other papers whose headlines used a less cheerleading-skirts-and-pompons approach to the story.

This is three days in a row the Star has concocted politically motivated headlines. Will Sunday make it four?
