Alvernon Way (on the route).  Garden open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, but Cyclovia is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden, Life exhibit ongoing to May 30, 2017.

Earth Day moving to Himmel Park

This year the Tucson Earth Day celebration will be on April 10,2016 and not at Reid Park, but at Himmel Park.

“Fun and Engaging Exhibits at the Himmel Park Activity Hub: Decorate your bike and engage in fun hands-on activities while getting smarter about renewable energy, land and water conservation, native plants, invasive species, air quality, climate resiliency, sustainability, and more. Discover how helping the planet helps you too!

 Earth Day Parade at 11:00 a.m.: Gather eco-minded clubs, scouts, schools, families, non-profit organizations, businesses, and agencies to march, bike, skate, dance, or create music in the parade. Line up at 10:45 a.m. on the west side of Himmel Park for an 11:00 a.m. start on this short non-motorized route along Tucson Boulevard and 3rd Street to the Sam Hughes Activity Hub. No registration required, and spectators are welcomed to join in the procession on the spot!”

Enjoy the festivities at Himmel Park, south of Speedway Blvd, along Tucson Blvd. This event coincides with the car free, bicycling event Cyclovia Tucson, which starts off at Himmel park (same area) and goes south on Tucson Blvd. then west to the E. 3rd Street bike route, all the way for 2.5 miles to the Lost Barrio shopping district.

Also for you plant & garden lovers, the Sam Hughes Neighborhood Assn. Garden tour is that same day (just west of Himmel Park) , from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More info at www.samhughes.org. Tickets $10, children free with paid adult.

NEW midtown route for Spring Cyclovia Tucson

Get our your bikes, trikes, wagons, strollers, skates, skateboards, hiking boots, etc. to enjoy the springtime at the Spring Cyclovia (care free, car free) event on April 10. Starting off at Himmel Park, you can ride/walk your way through lovely Sam Hughes Neighborhood, across Campbell to Rincon Heights Neighborhood, then south to the Miles Neighborhood, and Barrio San Antonio.

Don’t miss the Sam Hughes Neighborhood Garden tour, at their Activity Hub. Info at www.samhughes.org.

Final stop (don’t get lost) will be the shopping district in the Lost Barrio. Enjoy the Spring without your car or truck.  Stop at the various activity hubs and enjoy what fun is being planned for you & your family/friends.

Sam Hughes Neighborhood Garden tour (and more!) on April 10

Busy busy busy weekend  with Spring Fling over at the UA Mall, the Sam Hughes neighbors to the east of Campbell Ave. are having their garden tour, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday April 10.

Take the two mile round trip walk through 8 private residences, 2 public properties, a demonstration site for the “first in the nation” neighborhood phenology trail and the Children’s Gardens at Sam Hughes Elementary School.

Begin your Sunday afternoon stroll /GARDEN TOUR at Sam Hughes Elementary School, the heart of our vibrant community at 700 N. Wilson Ave. Buy your ticket ($10 per person) the day of the tour from 10 am to 2 pm. SHNA members pay only $5 (with certificate of membership), and children free with paid adult.

And to top it off, in the same neighborhood at Himmel Park will be Earth Day, and starting from there over to the Lost Barrio on Park Ave, will be car free Spring Cyclovia Tucson (both 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.). So drop by the neighborhood and enjoy all these festivities.  More at: www.samhughes.org.

I biked this route a few years ago and it was loads of fun stopping at the various hubs for info and activities.
