Martha McSally Exposed as the Worst Kind of Politician

Martha McSally video

Even among the hard right, McSally’s announcement video ad was received as confusing, weird, and ultra-Trumpian.

On a beautiful day in January, retired Air Force Colonel Martha McSally, the elusive Arizona Republican Congresswoman from Tucson, who has incredibly not held a Town Hall in close to three years, stood in front of a small crowd of VIPs congregated in a private airplane hangar (east of Tucson) and declared her candidacy for Arizona Senate. Her rally was an over the top, hyper-nationalistic “barn burner” of an occasion, where McSally told the crowd that she was ready to – as they say in the Air Force: Fly, Fight and Win.

McSally dressed up in her old A-10 flight suit, awkwardly rattled off some sort of racist stuff about the Mexican-American border, Sharia Law, and Trump’s Wall – then hopped in the back seat of a shiny WWII T-6 vintage trainer plane. She was then flown, by another pilot to Phoenix and Prescott for further campaign rallies – it was over-the-top self-aggrandizement.

U.S. Rep Martha McSally, a two-term Republican from Tucson and a former Air Force combat pilot is running for the same Senate seat which U.S. Senator Jeff Flake will retire from following his fiery rebuke of President Trump’s fascist tendencies on the Senate floor. The three-candidate, dogfight of a primary pits McSally, (the clear choice of the GOP establishment), against pardoned Sheriff Arpaio of Fountain Hills and conspiracy theorist Kelli Ward, a former state senator from Lake Havasu City, both of whom will be battling to win the party’s conservative base. Just last week, McSally was endorsed by our state’s former governor, Jan Brewer.

Confusing and weird

In the digital ad that accompanied her “Fly, Fight, Win” campaign rallies, McSally walks among aircraft and bizarrely declares:

“I refused to bow down to Sharia Law, and like our president, I am tired of DC politicians and their BS excuses – I am a fighter pilot and I talk like one. That’s why I told Washington Republicans to grown a pair of ovaries and get the job done.”

Grand Old Misogyny

You’ve got to pity Rand Paul after Thursday night’s Fox “Fair and Balanced And Totally Not An Arm Of The GOP!” News Republican Presidential Primary debate. This is not just because of the embarrassing scuffle with Chris Christie. No, it’s more to do with Rand failing to be the natural successor to his dad Ron Paul as the “Ron Paul of 2016”. Paul père was never expected to win the nomination in either 2008 or 2012 but he did capture the enthusiasm of a sizable enough number of libertarian (mostly) dudebros to make a showing in both those primaries and dot the landscape with silly hand-painted looking signs. This was a sure path to Ron Paul’s lucrative retirement hawking financial scams. Continue reading

The Tucson Progressive vs The Three Sonorans (video)

by Pamela Powers Hannley

The Three Sonorans took issue with my last article stating that my headline was in error. In his answer song article, he says that he has not "joined" FOX News; they merely posted one of his stories. (I'm assuming after he submitted it to them.)

Doesn't that imply some sort of collusion with the dark side, since FOX's whole raison d'etre is to shill for the 1%?

He also vehemently denied that he was trying to discourage voting in the CD8 special election and said he already voted. OK, so I took the bait and looked at the online image of his ballot… curious to see who he voted for since he said he wasn't voting for either Jesse Kelly (AKA evil) or Ron Barber (AKA the lesser of 2 evils, according to the 3Sons). Who did he vote for? "Nana Freida de Mexicans". Hmmm…you can draw your own conclusions: Does it appear as if he is encouraging people to throw their vote away?

At any rate, the exchange reminded me of this video…

Three Sonorans joins FOX News Latino and discourages voting

by Pamela Powers Hannley

Local firebrand blogger D.A. Morales (AKA the Three Sonorans), who was ousted from the TucsonCitizen.com for his "reckless disregard for the truth," has joined FOX News Latino. Judging by FOX News' reputation… well, you get the picture.

Except for Republicans Attorney General Tom Horne, Former State Senate President Russell Pearce, and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who were regularly (and justifiably) vilified in Morales' column, he generally focused on taking potshots at local and statewide Democrats. His June 1 article on the FOX News Latino website, he encourages Latinos not to vote in the Ron Barber-Jesse Kelly-Charlie Manolakis special election

As a Democrat I got to vote against ALIPAC-endorsed Jesse Kelly twice in the last two years, and will possibly vote a third time if the Tea Party Republican runs in the November election.

I also get the opportunity to not vote for the Democratic candidate to represent me once again.

I did not vote for Giffords after her attack on immigrants in which blame was placed on a Mexican, without any evidence, for the 2010 murder of the white rancher Rob Krentz. This was used to further militarize the international border, pushing even more migrant human beings out into the dangerous deserts southwest of Tucson.

I will also not vote for Ron Barber in the special election being held right now.

I totally agree with Morales' assessment of Kelly, Giffords, and Barber, but I don't agree with him on not voting. Every Democratic non-vote is a vote for Teapublican automaton Kelly. This is how we got a Teapublican US House of Representatives and a Teapublican Arizona Legislature: Democrats stayed home. This is a perfect message for FAUX News to promote to Latinos.

I lived in Giffords' district as long as she was in office. Despite her Blue Dog credentials, I voted for her many times, but I called or e-mailed her office hundreds of times to encourage her to vote progressively. Sometimes she did; sometimes she didn't. Maybe I'm a Pollyanna, but I always thought she listened. Working with her, I had some hope that she would vote the way I wanted her to. This is in stark contrast to US Senators John McCain and Jon Kyl; there was never a prayer they would ever vote progressively. In fact, they actively worked against issues that I hold dear… universal healthcare, true immigration reform (not militarization), clean elections, sound environmental policy, fair taxation, public education, a living wage, women's rights, and choice.

Despite his Blue Dog credentials, I voted for Barber. If he gets elected, he can expect to hear from me also.

Do you want someone you can potentially influence or someone who will totally ignore you? If you want to be ignored, don't vote but don't complain about the results… more for the 1%, less for the rest.

If you live in the old CD8, please vote on or before June 12.
