Tucson Japanese Festival to celebrate the New Year 2017

tjffinal2Our Southern Arizona Japanese Cultural Coalition (of which I have been the website Editor for 4 years) is sponsoring another New Year’s festival on January 14, 2017, at PCC Downtown campus, 1255 N. Stone Ave., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is our fourth Japanese New Year’s celebration in Tucson.

Once again we are offering Japanese martial arts & musical performances (on 2 stages this year), cultural activities and games, delicious Japanese snacks, tea, takoyaki (octopus) balls, and other cultural information.  Mochi rice pounding will be again performed with the kine (mallet) in the stone or wooden usu (bowl).  See photo below from last year’s popular event.  Event schedule also posted below.

  1. Over 700 people at this festival today, celebrating Japanese New Year and enjoying the performances, food, cultural activities. Highlights were taiko drumming by Odaiko Sonora, and K2 Enterprise (dynamic Ken Koshio from Phoenix), the mochi pounding with a new stone usu (mortar) and kine (mallets), song by Tucson Japanese Language School Choir (elementary school children). Also enjoyed the shakuhachi flute and koto performances, and of course the lively kendo competition. Ninja Hero Action Theater arrived late from Phoenix, so the event ran to 3:30 p.m. with numerous door prizes for the dedicated who waited. Happy New Year again.

  2. Event schedule update: Akiwa Abe Brown will be performing on the koto tomorrow at the Tucson Japanese Festival, with a solo performance “Rokudan”, and a duet with shakuhachi flute musician Paul Amiel. Performance will be 1:50 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Stage B at PCC Downtown, Amethyst room.

    In the event of rain, the performances will continue as Stage A is covered and Stage B is indoors, but room CC251 upstairs may be used for the shakuhachi and anime presentations. Stay tuned.
