Tucson’s K-6 Fitness Day

by David Safier

School fitness guru Steve Gall was at it again last Thursday with a Tucson K-6 Fitness Day. He told me over 22,000 Tucson area — TUSD, Sunnyside, Vail, Sahuarita, Catalina Foothills and Tanque Verde districts participated — did at least 30 minutes of organized physical activity to celebrate. Mayor Rothschild was scheduled to hold a press conference and read a proclamation at Carillo Elementary School, but that happened to be the day Jared Loughner was sentenced, so the Mayor and all the media were busy elsewhere. But, according to Steve,

"[Rothschild's] assistants read the Proclamation and Dr. Pedicone said a few nice words. The kids had a great time!

"The health and fitness program at Carrillo is excellent.  They have tremendous student and teacher involvement.  On that Thursday the kids were in different stations doing zoomba, tug of war, hula hoops and racing."
