Update: Hearing on the ‘show me your papers before you pee’ bill rescheduled to next Wednesday

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I posted yesterday about what Brahm Resnik of Channel 12 News in Phoenix has labeled the "show me your papers to pee" bill, Corrupt Kavanagh's disdain for democracy, abuse of power:

Rep. John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, wants to create Arizona’s first law governing restroom privileges. Under Senate Bill 1432, someone would be guilty of disorderly conduct if he or she uses a bathroom, locker room or dressing room that’s not designated for the sex listed on his or her birth certificate.

SB 1432 would make it illegal to enter a bathroom if signage indicates it is exclusively for the opposite sex. Authorities could charge violators with a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by a $2,500 fine and up to six months in jail.

The corrupt Kavanagh has an ulterior motive for submitting his "striker" and putting this discriminatory bill on his committee's agenda today — he is stacking his committee hearing agenda to screw with public testimony on Governor Jan Brewer's Medicaid (AHCCCS) Restoration Plan also scheduled for an informational hearing today.

It turns out that the corrupt Kavanagh screwed up, and testimony was not heard yesterday.

The Arizona Republic reported in Today at the Capitol:

Discussion of a controversial bill that would block many transgender people from using public bathrooms of their choice in Arizona was put back a week. The sponsor and committee chairman, John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, blamed a staff scheduling issue for a “communication breakdown” that prevented it from being heard by the House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday.

Senate Bill 1432, which would make a person guilty of disorderly conduct if they used a bathroom not designated for the sex listed on their birth certificate, is now scheduled for next Wednesday.

This bill is from Mullah Cathi Herrod and her Christian Taliban at the Center for Arizona Policy. You have more time to lobby your state legislators against this bill.

  1. supposedly according to the moron who wrote this bill up “police will use discretion” basically meaning he only wants it to prosecute transgender people, not “normal” people

  2. Good point. I don’t know how many times I have been at a sporting event or a bar and a woman walks into the men’s restroom because the line for the women’s restroom is too long and she just can’t hold it in that long. These women clearly did not feel sexually threatened by walking into a men’s restroom with a bunch of guys with their privates in their hand. This bill is about fear mongering against transgenders.

  3. So, all those women who use an empty men’s restroom at a crowded bar or restaurant, when the women’s room has an outrageously long line (because the city allowed the business to have too few accommodations) could be fined $2500 and put in jail?

It seems that this bill goes to ridiculous lengths to entrap people.

  4. Where in the hell do these ‘wing nuts’ get these absurd ideas? Precisely the point Katelyn, if a ‘predator’ is going to assault, they’re not going to jump thru silly hoops like dressing up, or obtaining alternate id; instead they’ll just walk in and lock the door. Besides, this is a smokescreen to discriminate against transgendered folks becauase the self righteous god bags don’t like them having a life.

  5. The point you miss is that Kavanagh’s bill seeks to criminalize being a transgender to falsely malign these individuals as sexual predators. This is irrational fear-based discrimination.

As for your example, heterosexual men have been kidnapping, raping and sexually abusing women since time began. That’s why we have a criminal code for these offenses.

  6. I am sorry to say your fears are unfounded and have no base of truth to them, Colorado has had SB 200 in law for over 6 years and has had absolutely NO incidents of a man faking he is trans to gain access to the womens restrooms, 0 CASES IN 6 YEARS! the facct is, if ever there has been a belief that the individual is fraudulently presenting for criminal purposes an ID is sufficiant evidence to suggest whether or not they are in fact really transgendered, and the hoops in place that a person has to go through in order to get that documentation changed is enough to keep people from just changing it for no good reason, you MUST have a doctor write you a letter indicating you are in fact trans and IRREVOCABLY determined to have the proceedures done. if you do not fit this criteria you don’t get the change, so a rapist or pervert who just wants to see women or girls pee isn’t going to gain access legally, and I hate to say it but NO LAW will prevent a rapist or pervert from going into the restroom to get what they want, if they are planning to break the law to rape a woman, what difference does it make if they broke a law by going in? IT WON’T PREVENT ANYTHING.

  7. There are other laws that cover that issue you raised ! The problem here is that a small group of people want to make life hell for another group of people they fear and hate. If this was such a big problem why haven’t we heard of this before now? Why ? There is no problem the problem on resides in somebody’s little pumpkin head.

  8. So, you don’t like Kavanagh, okay. But you support the very real inevitability of a 100% heterosexual man stalking women in various stages of undress in toilets, dressing rooms and locker rooms, so he can get his jollies, and be wearing a disguise of women’s clothing. And when he’s found out, he can just brush it off and say he’s a ‘trans?’ It’s ridiculous to think a psycho would do this to kidnap women at say, some random rest stop, right? Whose safety and rights are more important here?
Sorry to those who are confused, but maybe put a penis on the Men’s Room door and a vagina on the Ladies Room to help the unsure. Problem solved.
