We Shall Overcome.

The trends we are experiencing today in the United States has happened before in our country and past generations overcame them.

There have been earlier periods in our history when people in this country (from both political parties)  have had a maniacal fear and prejudice towards “the other” be it groups like the Irish, the Africans, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Italians, the Jews, or even the groups that have been on this land before us like the Hispanics and Native Americans.

Past Generations mostly overcame those fears and prejudices and this generation will do so again.

There have been earlier periods in our history when our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents had to deal with the rants and ravings of demagogues, opportunists, genuine witch hunters, racist predators, rabid isolationists, and reactionary fundamentalists from both political parties that looked to stifle progress, science, education, tolerance, enlightenment, and keep us in the Dark Ages of Ignorance.

Past Generations mostly overcame these fanatics and this generation will do so again.

There have been earlier periods in our history when our public servants cared more for the affluent than those in needs.

Past generations have overcome these tendencies before and this generation will do so again.

Everyone needs to take comfort in the fact that we have smelled the stench that President Trump and his supporters (in and outside the United States) exude and all they represent before in history. It has been fought with and defeated before and it will be again by promoting an inclusive progressive vision, working hard and vanquishing them at the ballot box this November and in 2020.

To borrow, like many before (including Lyndon Johnson). from the key phrase in the Civil Rights Anthem,

WE SHALL OVERCOME.
