(UPDATED) Arizona Mayors ask Governor Ducey for Guidance and Assistance during the Coronavirus

Earlier today Mayors Gerry Anaya of Somerton, Coral Evans of Flagstaff, Thomas McCauley of Winslow, Regina Romero of Tucson, and Ana Tovar of Tolleson sent a letter (see the link to the letter at the end of the article) to Governor Doug Ducey asking for:

This clarity would, according to the Mayors, “help prevent confusion for our local business and residents, and provide the clear, uniform direction our state needs during this critical juncture.”

  • “A statewide moratorium on all evictions and foreclosures.”  The Mayors “seek assurance that no Arizonan loses their home due to the economic hardship imposed by COVID-19 (The Coronavirus.)

In the letter, the Mayors also wrote:

“We acknowledge that these are painful decisions with severe economic repercussions, but immediate action will save lives. Moreover, they are decisions we prefer to have state guidance on to avoid the aforementioned inconsistencies and lack of uniformity.”

Annie DeGraw, the Communications Director for Mayor Kate Gallego commented:

“It is our understanding that per yesterday’s Executive Order the state now has the sole power to issue a stay at home order. We have already instituted a halt on evictions from Phoenix city housing and would like to see others take this same action.”
The Mayors are correct. There should be greater statewide preventive coordination instead of reacting to the latest regional health trends.
This could also be said for the national response as well.
Hopefully, Governor Ducey will realize this and take greater proactive steps in the coming hours.
UPDATE: Governor Ducey has issued an Executive Order halting evictons for people “impacted” by the Coronavirus for 120 days.
