“I am a dedicated educator, business owner, TUSD parent, and come from a long line of TUSD teachers. I’m a passionate advocate for educational equity, inclusion, diversity and equal access to an excellent public education for all. I believe that every student deserves the opportunity to achieve all they can in life, and a high quality public education is the key to that achievement. “
Carolyn’s note: Two seats are up on the TUSD Governing Board for election in Nov. 2018 — currently being held by Adelita Grijalva and Michael Hicks, both of whom are running for re-election.  Leila is a political newcomer,  as is LGBT activist Adam Ragan, who is also running for one of these 2 board positions, which are volunteer & nonpartisan.

    1. UPDATE on my last comment — Current TUSD Board member Adelita Grijalva is running for re-election, so there may be 4 people seeking 2 seats, with both incumbents Adelita and Michael Hicks running for re-election. The other candidate is political newcomer Adam Ragan, who kicks off on Sat.May 12 at 3 p.m. at Petroglyphs. Our Calendar has more details.

    2. Over 50 people at this kick off event, including TUSD board member Mark Stegeman and PCDP Chair Jo Holt. Leila said she is a 4th generation Tucson educator, has received 150 donations, gotten 1000 signatures already. She believes in “quality & equity”, wants to reduce classroom size, address teacher shortage thru JTED, bring back PE/music/art to TUSD schools. She is 1/2 Iranian, has a Kindergartener and a preschooler. Her husband Austin Counts entertained the supporters with his guitar music. Hearing a rumor that current TUSD board member Adelita Grijalva may not seek re-election in 2018.
