PDA Tucson: Fighting Dark Money in Elections

    dark moneyAs anyone who watches network television can plainly see, millions of dollars in dark money is FLOODING into Arizona races this year– primarily from right-wing groups, like Americans for Prosperity (AKA the Koch Brothers).

    How can we stop corporate people from buying our elections? 

    The October 16 meeting of Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) Tucson will focus on the clean elections fight.

    Speakers begin at 6:30

    PDA Tucson’s Clean Elections IOT Leader Rick Grapp will introduce the topic and give some elections statistics.

    PDA Tucson Chair and former Arizona Senate Minority Leader Phil Lopes will talk about how to win when you’re running clean.

    PDA Tucson Media Coordinator Pamela Powers Hannley will talk about the @Bad4AZ Twitter campaign and how to combat dark money with social media.

    After these brief introductory comments,

    Lee Stanfield will talk about the importance of the Move to Amend movement which would create a Constitutional amendment to say corporations are not people and money is not speech. This would overturn the Citizens United ruling which has allowed limitless amounts of cash to flood elections.The Move To Amend proposed amendment is the only one that does all these things without leaving anything open to interpretation loopholes, according to Stanfield.

    An Arizona Advocacy Network representative will discuss advances that have been made in Arizona on saving and building clean elections, despite attacks from the Arizona Legislature.

    Discussion will follow about tactics to fight dark money.
