MANUFACTURING CONSENT

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10 AT 6:30PM | GENERAL ADMISSION: $15 • LOFT MEMBERS: $10

Professor Chomsky will be presented the Lofty Achievement Award before the screening.

“This award-winning documentary showcases Chomsky’s message of how government and big media businesses cooperate to produce an effective propaganda machine in order to manipulate public opinion.

The key examples featured for this analysis are the simultaneous events of the massive coverage of the communist atrocities of Khmer Rouge regime of Cambodia and the suppression of news surrounding the U.S.-supported Indonesian invasion and subjugation of East Timor. (Dir. by Mark Achbar and Peter Wintonick, USA, 1992, 167 min. Not Rated)

The Lofty Achievement Award is presented each year at the Loft Film Fest to an individual whose career and body of work have significantly contributed to the world of cinema, and who continues to inspire, entertain and enlighten audiences. This year, the Loft Film Fest is proud to present the 2017 Lofty Achievement Award to Noam Chomsky.

Noam Chomsky, a laureate professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Arizona’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, holds the title of Agnese Nelms Haury Chair in the Haury Program in Environment and Social Justice. He has appeared in more than 20 documentary films, making a unique contribution to the capacity of film to educate, inspire and move audiences to action. Professor Chomsky is considered a pioneer of modern linguistics and one of the most influential public intellectuals in the world. He is the subject of seven biographies and has written more than 100 books. His legacy took a different kind of prominence in the acclaimed 2016 movie Captain Fantastic starring Viggo Mortensen, in which a family living off the grid in the Pacific Northwest celebrates “Noam Chomsky Day” instead of Christmas.”
