One response to “Rev. John Fife on “Current Immigration Issues in the Southern Arizona Border Region” at DGT

  1. Rev. Fife spoke today of “The New Jim Crow” book by Dr. Michele Alexander about how there is a new racial caste (of black/brown people) in America, due to the increased incarceration rates due to crack down on the war on drugs. He said there are now more African Americans in our prisons than were enslaved in 1850. Because there is no 2nd chance for convicted felons (many of whom are African Americans) this new caste system has been created in cities like Chicago, Detroit, Newark. He also mentioned the high # of illegal immigrant deportations (400,000/year quota under Obama Administration) and SB 1070, driving Mexicans out of Arizona. Finally he emphasized hope with the Black Lives Matter movement,to new creative ways to resist and to find alternatives to mass incarceration.
