In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Salt of the Earth (the movie), the Salt of the Earth Labor College is sponsoring a presentation and discussion with David Myers, retired history Professor and lifelong activist.
Salt of the Earth is a landmark movie about the 1951 strike against the Empire Zinc Company in Grant County, New Mexico.
Myers will discuss:
- A history of censorship and politics during the McCarthy period and the early Cold War.
- How this great labor, feminist, and civil rights movie was suppressed by Hollywood, organized labor collaborators, and federal and local governments, and
- How blacklisted Hollywood artists and blackballed union activists managed to produce one of our country’s most memorable films.
