    Carolyn Classen
    Carolyn Sugiyama Classen, a life long Democrat, was born & raised in the State of Hawaii, was a Legislative Aide for U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye on Capitol Hill, and practiced law for a while. In Tucson she worked as a tribal staff attorney for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and later was the Interim Executive Director of the now defunct Domestic Violence Commission. In 2008 she became a “My Tucson” guest columnist for the Tucson Citizen newspaper, then continued blogging for Tucsoncitizen.com for over four and a half years. Her blogsite was entitled “Carolyn’s Community” about community events and some political news, until Gannett Publishing shut down the site on January 31, 2014. She started with Blog for Arizona on Feb. 11, 2014. Part time she has been sitting as a Hearing Officer in Pima County Consolidated Justice Courts Small Claims Division since April, 2005. She is married to University of Arizona Distinguished Professor Albrecht Classen, a native of Germany. They have one son, who lives in Seattle, WA with his wife and daughter. She is also the Editor of the Southern Arizona Japanese Cultural Coalition website, www.southernazjapan.org (since Jan. 2013).

MC David Fitzsimmons welcomed the crowd of about 250 people, introduced first musical group Mariachi Aztlan de Pueblo HS, followed by Moms Demand Action speaker Pat Maisch who said “Vote them out” regarding those who don’t believe in gun safety laws. Then Outlaw Dirty $ advocate Stephanie O’Leary spoke of their new posse to track dirty $ ads. Songwriter Joyce Luna took the stage singing a song against gun violence with a Women Machine group, followed by the WayBack Machine singing resistance songs. Then educator Kendra Speech advocated voting, activism, donating $ to the causes; followed by immigration attorney Isabel Garcia on workers/people’s rights. Red for Ed educator Wes Osbourne and a woman special ed teacher told the audience to vote No on Prop 305 and to vote for pro public ed candidates. Statewide candidate Kathy Hoffman, running for Supe of Public Instruction energized the teachers in the theater. Santa Pachita played their Latin fusion sounds (trumpets, trombone, sax, drums, guitars) before 2 Steve Farley supporters came up, with AJ Flick reading Steve’s statement to “never give up”, then Kelly Fryer spoke of the “crooks” in the AZ Government and gave her support to Dr. Garcia. Keynote speaker David Garcia energized the crowd talking about his working class Arizona background in Mesa, that he was “in this fight for public ed”, to “invest in the future of education”, that he had served his country in the military, not served ice cream (as Gov. Ducey had). Attending today were a # of Dem officials and candidates: LD 9 Senate candidate Victoria Steele, Reps. Randy Friese and Pam Powers Hannley, LD 10 Rep. Kirsten Engel, and candidate Domingo DeGrazia, TUSD Bd. members Adelita Grijalva and Kristel Foster and candidate Leila Counts, Tucson Councilman Paul Cunningham, his wife Alisa (JP candidate), former Councilmembers Karin Uhlich and Molly McKasson, Amphi School Bd. member-elect Matt Kopec, candidate Gary Harrison for Superior Court Clerk, ret. JP Carmen Dolny, PCC Governing Bd. member Mark Hanna. Tables represented were Planned Parenthood of AZ, Red for Ed, Outlaw Dirty $, Moms Demand Action, Dem Party, Mi Familia Vota.Also attending were CD 2 candidates (who lost in the primary) Billy Kovacs, Dr. Matt Heinz and Bruce Wheeler. Together we can win.
