SUMMARY:RTA Next special election
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The public is invited to review the Regional Transportation Authority’s $2.67 billion regional transportation plan\, approved by the RTA Board on Aug. 25\, 2025\, for future voter consideration. The final RTA Next plan was completed with input from RTA members and the public gathered through surveys\, open houses\, meetings\, and submitted comments.  \n\n\n\nThe board has set an election date of March 10\, 2026\, when voters in Pima County will have the ultimate say on the plan. \n\n\n\nThe 20-year plan includes five elements: \n\n\n\n\nRoadway (multimodal) Corridor\n\n\n\nArterial Reconstruction\n\n\n\nTransit\n\n\n\nSafety\, ADA and Active Transportation\n\n\n\nEnvironmental\n\n\n\n\nThe RTA is a state-established taxing district within the boundaries of Pima County. The RTA’s current 20-year plan is funded by a half-cent sales tax. Both were approved by voters in 2006. The new plan and funding investment for another 20 years will require voter approval for both to go into effect. \n\n\n\nThe RTA\, which was established in 2004\, has invested more than $1.6 billion in more than 1\,000 transportation improvements across the greater Tucson region.” \n\n\n\n\nRTA Next Final Plan (pdf) – Approved Aug. 25\, 2025\n\n\n\nRTA Next Plan Comment Form\n\n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: RTA brought changes to this region\, with passage of this original 20 year plan in May\, 2006\, funded by a half cent sales increase. RTA Next wants an extension of that same sales tax. The biggest projects in Tucson were the 4 mile Sun link streetcar\, widening of E. Broadway Blvd. and the continued widening of E. Grant Rd. \n\n\n\nProp 418 and 419 on the March 10 ballot. \n\n\n\n\n“Proposition 418 – RTA PlanSubmission deadline: December 10\, 2025Do you approve the regional transportation plan for Pima County?\n\nA “YES” vote indicates your approval of the proposed regional transportation plan as developed by the Regional Transportation Authority of Pima County and described in the election materials.\n\n\n\nA “NO” vote indicates your disapproval of the proposed regional transportation plan.\n\n\n\n\n\nProposition 419 – RTA TaxSubmission deadline:  December 10\, 2025Do you favor the levy of a transaction privilege (sales) tax for regional transportation purposes in Pima County?\n\nA “YES” vote has the effect of imposing a transaction privilege (sales) tax in Pima County for twenty years to provide funding for the transportation projects contained in the regional transportation plan.\n\n\n\nA “NO” vote has the effect of rejecting the transaction privilege (sales) tax for transportation purposes in Pima County.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nView the full text of Proposition 418 PDF and Proposition 419 PDF.” \n\n\n\nEarly ballots go out on Feb. 11.

SUMMARY:The Gift of Trees at Sustainable Tucson meeting
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\nThe Gifts of Trees\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, March 106:00-7:15 pmVia Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81445716182?pwd=4aMyqKer6cY7dcEJrSWYA9TaGXUYDK.1 I am the bread of kindness and the flower of beauty. Ye who pass by\, listen to my prayer: Harm me not.– Ancient prayer\, in Portuguese forest preservations “On a hot summer’s day\, trees can cool the air\, and the ground beneath them\, as much as 9-13 degrees.  Trees give many more such gifts to us every day.  Join us for a conversation with Adam Farrell-Wortman\, Horticultural Director at the Tucson Botanical Gardens\, and arborist Nazareth Taraz\, who will paint a picture of the amazing gifts of trees to humans and to habitat\, and describe how we can best serve the trees in our desert community.”Carolyn’s note: This talk reminds me of a poem from high school:TreesBy Joyce Kilmer“I think that I shall never seeA poem lovely as a tree.A tree whose hungry mouth is prestAgainst the earth’s sweet flowing breast;A tree that looks at God all day\,And lifts her leafy arms to pray;A tree that may in Summer wearA nest of robins in her hair;Upon whose bosom snow has lain;Who intimately lives with rain.Poems are made by fools like me\,But only God can make a tree.” \n\n\n\n
