SUMMARY:From Shale to Plastic at Sustainable Tucson meeting
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\nOctober Sustainability Spotlight\, Tuesday\, Oct 13\, 2026 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n(Source:  Alexandra Kanik | Ohio Valley ReSource) \n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81094385916?pwd=lSYHjmxgg5h4NRmsEXDASSck7r2hdA.1&mynotes=on \n\n\n\nPlastic\, especially in single-use items\, is often seen mainly as a waste and litter issue.  But many of its environmental and public health impacts start earlier in the plastic lifecycle\, during fossil fuel extraction\, refining and polymer manufacturing. \n\n\n\nJoin us at our October Sustainability Spotlight as we explore the often-overlooked upstream impacts of plastic.  We’ll trace the journey from extracting natural gas from shale formations to processing fossil-fuel-derived chemicals into plastic feedstocks and manufacturing everyday products such as plastic straws. \n\n\n\nWe’ll also examine how the infrastructure that supports plastic production can negatively affect communities near natural gas extraction sites and petrochemical facilities.  The key takeaway is clear:  reducing plastic pollution means doing much more than managing waste after it is created. It also requires recognizing plastic’s strong ties to the fossil fuel economy and the burdens that production places on nearby communities through air\, water\, and soil. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur speaker\, Larisa Mednis\, serves as the Clean Air Council’s Southwest Pennsylvania Advocacy Coordinator.  She leads regional efforts to reduce fossil fuel dependence and support the transition to clean energy.  Her work focuses on environmental monitoring\, watchdog activities\, public policy  \n\n\n\nadvocacy\, and community organizing around the impacts of Shell’s petrochemical plant in Beaver County\, Pennsylvania\, about 40 minutes north of Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\nOpened in 2022\, this Shell facility turns ethane from natural gas into ethylene and polyethylene\, key materials used to make plastic products.  As a major petrochemical facility in Western Pennsylvania\, it highlights the link between expanded natural gas production\, petrochemical growth\, and plastics manufacturing—especially single-use products and packaging that the fossil fuel industry sees as a major growth market.

SUMMARY:Free screening of “The River” film
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\nTickets Available DAY OF at Box Office \n\n\n\nWEDNESDAY\, OCTOBER 14 AT 6:30PM\n\n\n\nFREE ADMISSION\n\n\n\nTICKETS AVAILABLE DAY OF AT BOX OFFICE\n\n\n\n“Join us for a special screening of The River\, followed by a community Q&A with the filmmakers\, community members\, and participants featured in the film. The event will offer an opportunity to explore the urgent issues surrounding the Colorado River and hear directly from those whose lives\, communities\, and futures are connected to its waters. \n\n\n\nAfter 5 million years of existence\, the Colorado River now fights to survive. This once thriving life source to millions of people and wildlife\, is now on the brink of collapse\, as human consumption\, booming industry\, and climate change threaten to dry up its already depleted reservoirs forever. In a moment of reckoning\, an unlikely ensemble of people dependent on the River must defend their way of life against modern pressures and unjust laws\, all while coming to terms with the choices we’ve made that have led to this disaster and the uncertain future ahead. But this ancient river has always had a life of its own\, and there are still some who will stand up and give it a voice. For if the river can regenerate\, maybe so can we. \n\n\n\nFollowing the screening\, filmmakers will be joined by community members and film participants for a conversation about the film\, the Colorado River\, and the experiences and perspectives that shaped the story. The Q&A will offer an opportunity for audiences to engage directly with the people at the center of this important conversation. (Dir. by Mara Gasbarro Tasker\, 2026\, USA\, 88 mins.\, Not Rated) \n\n\n\nThis is a Community Rental by The River Impact Campaign\, LLC.” \n\n\n\n1 HR 28 MIN | NR\n\n\n\nReleased 2026

DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime\n\n\n\nSaturday\, October 17 \n\n\n\n8:30am – 12pm MST \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThis event’s address is private.Sign up for more details. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\n“Join Civic Engagement Beyond Voting and friends to decorate cars and celebrate early voting! We’ll gather in North Phoenix (address when you sign up) and drive on a high-visibility route (provided at site) to make sure people know to get their votes in early!  \n\n\n\nBring your completed ballot to mail if you can!  \n\n\n\nThis Day of Action\, we’re voting together\, in community — with music\, joy\, and the power of our voices. \n\n\n\nWe’re ready to vote. We’re ready to be heard. We’re ready to protect our democracy. \n\n\n\n🗳️ No Kings. Just Votes. Join the parade! \n\n\n\nWe decide who represents us. We decide what comes next. \n\n\n\nFor more than a year\, millions of people have come together to reject the idea that power belongs to kings\, billionaires\, or politicians who believe they are above the people and the law. \n\n\n\nNow\, we are taking the next step\, turning people power into voter power. Unlike previous No Kings actions\, No Kings: Vote Early\, is not purely a protest. Instead\, on October 17th\, it’s a nationwide day of nonpartisan voter participation: we are bringing our community together to make a plan to vote early and ensuring every eligible voter understands their options for how to vote and has the opportunity to make their voice heard. \n\n\n\nBecause no one person gets to decide our leaders before voters do. On October 17th\, join friends near and far as we get out the early vote around the country\, and say it loud: no thrones\, no crowns\, no kings. \n\n\n\nNo Kings: Vote Early events are nonpartisan and are designed to increase participation from all eligible voters. \n\n\n\nA core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind\, including those legally permitted\, should not be brought to events. “https://www.mobilize.us/cebv/event/1045042/?emci=223b183a-beb9-f111-a6a9-000d3a56d2f7&emdi=29d07cc1-d3ba-f111-a6a9-000d3a56d2f7&ceid=11591071

SUMMARY:”The White House Effect” free screening
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets Available DAY OF at Box Office \n\n\n\nSATURDAY\, OCTOBER 17 AT 2:30PM\n\n\n\nFREE ADMISSION\n\n\n\nTICKETS AVAILABLE DAY OF AT BOX OFFICE\n\n\n\n“Join us for a Free Screening of Emmy-nominated The White House Effect with a Post-Screening Talkback! \n\n\n\nA riveting look at a key moment in the history of the climate crisis\, THE WHITE HOUSE EFFECT from directors Bonni Cohen\, Pedro Kos and Jon Shenk travels back in time to document how a crucial opportunity to take real action on global warming was not just squandered but deliberately undermined. \n\n\n\nWoven entirely of archival material\, the documentary focuses on the pivotal years of the George H.W. Bush administration—1988 to 1992—when the entire country was waking up to the reality of global warming and Bush had pledged to use “the White House effect” to tackle it. \n\n\n\nInfuriating and irrefutable\, THE WHITE HOUSE EFFECT tracks cause and effect with devastating precision to reveal just how hollow that promise became as Bush finds himself increasingly caught between his chief of staff John Sununu and industry power brokers on one side and his EPA chief Bill Reilly and climatologists on the other. \n\n\n\nAs the world prepares for the Rio Earth Summit in 1992\, Bush faces mounting pressure to make a decision that will change the course of history—culminating with the U.S. undermining a global agreement to set hard limits on emissions\, setting the stage for the increasingly hot\, dangerous\, and polarized future we all now face. (Dir. by Bonni Cohen\, Pedro Kos & Jon Shenk\, 2024\, USA\, 94 mins.\, Not Rated) \n\n\n\nThis screening will be followed by an intergenerational discussion with local activists moderated by 350.org’s US Campaigns Manager Candice Fortin. \n\n\n\nThis is a Community Rental presented by Actual Films.” \n\n\n\n1 HR 36 MIN | NR\n\n\n\nReleased 2024\n\n\n\n\nThe White House Effect

SUMMARY:”The Mirage” and “Ghost in the Machine” free film screenings about AI
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets Available DAY OF at Box Office \n\n\n\nSUNDAY\, OCTOBER 25 AT 2:00PM\n\n\n\nFREE ADMISSION\n\n\n\nTICKETS AVAILABLE DAY OF AT BOX OFFICE\n\n\n\n“Music Against the Machine\, an art and music fest hosted by the No Desert Data Center Coalition\, presents a community double feature in collaboration with Desert Dispatch Media and Ghost in the Machine. \n\n\n\nFrom 1pm until 2pm Meet and Greet with Desert Dispatch Media co-facilitators Jodi Darby and Melinda Matson Spina.  Connect with community members in the movement against mining\, militarization\, surveillance\, data centers\, and other harms for AI. \n\n\n\nThe screenings will begin at 2pm. \n\n\n\nThe Mirage: Inhumane Tech in the Silicon Desert (15min) by media artist Jodi Darby and composers Sage Bond and Kevin Van Winkle \n\n\n\nThe Mirage: Inhumane Tech in the Silicon Desert is an impact video to catalyze public knowledge and discussion on hyperscale threats in the North American desert region\, produced by Desert Dispatch Media with Jodi Darby\, Sage Bond\, and Kevin Van Winkle. \n\n\n\nMedia Artist Jodi Darby co-directed the 2015 award-winning documentary\, Arresting Power: Resisting Police Violence in Portland\, Oregon. \n\n\n\nComposer Sage Bond is a Diné composer and vocal artist ‘in residence’ from the Four Corners region\, who has performed at Carnegie Hall and who collaborates with her partner\, composer and orchestrator Kevin Van Winkle. \n\n\n\nGHOST IN THE MACHINE (110 min)Ghost in the Machine is a gripping and urgently relevant investigative documentary that exposes the buried history of artificial intelligence\, not as a neutral system of algorithms\, but as a technology shaped by racism\, misogyny\, eugenics\, and entrenched structures of power long before it entered everyday life. Rejecting the notion of AI as inevitable or objective\, the film traces how myths of progress and efficiency have obscured deeper political and cultural agendas\, revealing the ideological foundations beneath the systems now reshaping modern society. \n\n\n\nStructured as an eight-chapter inquiry\, the film blends historical excavation with contemporary analysis to confront essential questions: who built these systems\, whose values they encode\, and who they benefit. Directed by Valerie Veatch\, whose Sundance-premiering films ME @ THE ZOO (HBO) and LOVE CHILD (HBO) examined how emerging technologies transform identity\, power\, and culture\, Ghost in the Machine employs a bold yet accessible cinematic approach that is as unsettling as it is illuminating\, offering a visceral understanding of a technology that now touches nearly every aspect of modern life. \n\n\n\nThis is not a film about machines. It is a film about power. Ghost in the Machine interrogates who builds AI\, who benefits from it\, and who bears the cost. \n\n\n\nDesert Dispatch Media is a grassroots production group\, led by women and based in the desert southwest\, tax-deductible through the Desert Advocacy Media Network; and in search of a regional director to collaborate with in producing a feature documentary on the desert regional movement against inhumane extraction\, expansion\, and deployment for AI. \n\n\n\nBuild capacity for Desert Dispatch Media productions by making a donation at thedamn.org/DDfund \n\n\n\nThis is a Community Rental presented by Ghost Doc LLC.” \n\n\n\n2 HR 0 MIN | NR\n\n\n\nReleased 2026\n\n\n\n\nThe Mirage and Ghost In The Machine Double Feature

SUMMARY:”The Work in Progress” film
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTUESDAY\, OCTOBER 27 AT 7:30PM\n\n\n\nREGULAR ADMISSION PRICES\n\n\n\nPASSES ACCEPTED\n\n\n\nFrom executive producer ROBERT REICH and the filmmakers of The Last Class! \n\n\n\n“If you were invited to sit at a table with someone you’ve never met before and answer handwritten questions from a wooden box about the state of America\, would you run the other way? The Work in Progress invites strangers from across generations and geographies to engage in candid discussions about America’s ever-evolving democracy\, identity\, and definitions of community — and where the heck we go from here. Guided by questions posed by Executive Producer Robert Reich\, participants sit down in a series of conversations with one another to explore the country they’re living in now and the one they still believe is possible. \n\n\n\nThese encounters are intercut with portraits of Americans at work — in woodshops\, laboratories\, fields\, board rooms\, recording studios\, theaters\, and beyond. The message is simple but profound: America can work because\, in many ways\, it’s already working. And a central part of the work ahead is to reclaim the practices of dialogue\, debate\, compromise\, and perhaps most importantly\, listening\, so that we might find our footing again. \n\n\n\nWhat emerges in The Work in Progress is an unusual and provocative glimpse of America in its 250th year\, and an invitation to all Americans to pull up a chair\, invite a stranger\, and lend an ear. (Dir. by Ian Cheney\, 2026\, USA\, 103 min.\, Not Rated) “ \n\n\n\n1 HR 43 MIN | NR\n\n\n\nReleased 2026\n\n\n\n\nThe Work in Progress
