SUMMARY:”Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt” film
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSUNDAY\, NOVEMBER 29 AT 2:00PM\n\n\n\nREGULAR ADMISSION PRICES\n\n\n\nPASSES ACCEPTED\n\n\n\nCommemorate World AIDS Day (December 1) with a special screening of the powerful\, Oscar-winning 1989 documentary COMMON THREADS: STORIES FROM THE QUILT\, co-presented by SAAF (Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation). \n\n\n\nStarted in a San Francisco storefront by the NAMES Project in the summer of 1987\, the AIDS Memorial Quilt had grown to include 8\,288 handmade panels by 1988\, each honoring a life lost. Filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman witnessed the quilt’s early days and then quickly moved to capture on film the personal stories woven into this historic monument\, a powerful record of grief\, resilience\, and activism that won the 1989 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Co-produced by Dolly Parton’s Sandollar Productions. (Dir. by Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman\, 1989\, USA\, 79 mins.\, Not Rated) \n\n\n\n1 HR 20 MIN | NR\n\n\n\nReleased 1989\n\n\n\n\nCommon Threads: Stories from the Quilt

SUMMARY:Book discussion on “How to Close a Camp” by journalist John Washington
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\nBook & Author Event: John Washington on How to Close a CampJoin us for a conversation with Tucson journalist John Washington about immigrant detention\, community resistance\, and what it takes to close a camp. Ian Philabaum of Innovation Law Lab will facilitate this conversation. When: Thursday\, Dec. 3rd\, 6 – 7:30 PMWhere: Tucson Jewish Museum & Holocaust Center\, 564 S. Stone Ave.Jewish history has taught us to pay attention when governments begin to define certain people as outsiders: when neighbors become targets\, when borders become instruments of exclusion\, and when detention and state violence are justified by who people are rather than what they have done. Today\, immigrant detention centers are proliferating across the country\, while masked federal agents detain and deport our neighbors. In How to Close a Camp\, award-winning journalist and translator John Washington offers an unflinching look at the history of state violence against migrants and a practical guide to resisting immigrant detention.Jewish tradition\, rooted in both moral principle and in collective memory\, commands us to love the stranger. But what does that history ask of us now? What are our obligations to the stranger\, to our neighbors\, and to one another? And how can we all move from moral witness to meaningful action?About the speakersJohn Washington has written for The Atlantic\, The Washington Post\, The Nation\, and The Intercept. He is also the author of The Case for Open Borders and The Dispossessed: A Story of Asylum at the US-Mexico Border and Beyond. He lives in Tucson.Ian Philabaum\, Director of Legal Organizing at Innovation Law Lab\, will facilitate the conversation. Ian began this work in 2015\, providing legal services to mothers and children detained in the South Texas family detention center in Dilley\, and has since helped build legal projects in ten states. He was born and raised in Tucson.Read it first. Copies of How to Close a Camp are available now at the museum. Pick one up\, read it before December 3\, and come ready to join the conversation. The event is free\, but registration is required.Register here

If you’ve never experienced AIDSWALK\, then we highly recommend you come join us this year on Saturday\, December 5th. \n\n\n\nAIDSWALK is a family and pet-friendly walking (or running) fundraiser with the goal of increasing awareness and support for people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. The money raised at AIDSWALK Tucson benefits Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF). Each year SAAF provides services to nearly 1\,700 people living with HIV and AIDS and delivers targeted prevention outreach and education programs to over 17\,000 people who are at high-risk for infection. \n\n\n\nAt AIDSWALK\, you will have the opportunity to learn more about HIV\, to remember those we have lost to AIDS\, and celebrate many around us that are thriving each day living with HIV. There will be plenty of entertainment and activities to bring us all together in support of this great cause.  \n\n\n\nThank you to our 2025 Sponsors”\n\n\n\nat Reid Park.
