SUMMARY:Jonathan Treble\, candidate for CD 1 at DGT
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Please join us for a lively discussion with Jonathan Treble about his campaign for the primary nomination for the Democratic Party to run for the now open seat in Arizona’s CD1. \n\n\n\nYou Must Register in Advance for this Event:\n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/npHIyMMaQRqGWWmTrKbX8A\n\n\n\nJonathan Treble is a Democrat\, public school dad\, and small business owner with middle-class and union roots. After putting himself through college and becoming the first in his family to graduate\, Jonathan started a business in his living room and went door to door to scale it into one of the fastest-growing companies in the country\, reflecting his commitment to green practices and veteran hiring. After a major health crisis and a battle with insurance\, he’s running for Congress to expand access to affordable healthcare\, reverse Trump-era cuts\, and protect Medicare and Medicaid.” \n\n\n\nTrebele’s campaign website: https://trebleforaz.com/ \n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: CD 1 in Phoenix is represented by long term Republican David Schweikert\, who has been in Congress for 15 years. Former Az House Rep. Democrat Dr. Amish Shah is also running for this seat in the Dem primary in 2026. Shah ran for this seat in Nov. 2024\, got 48% of the vote then. \n\n\n\nCD 1 voter registration stats from Oct. 2025: Dems 144\, 250; Republicans 207\,357\, Others 181\,064.

SUMMARY:Nationwide Shutdown
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, Blogger \n\n\n\nNational Shutdown: No Work\, No School\, No Shopping\n\n\n\nFRIDAY JAN 30 \n\n\n\nALL DAY \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nEverywhere \n\n\n\nOrganizer: Somali Student Association at University of Minnesota [National] \n\n\n\n“Visit nationalshutdown.us for more information about this national day of action. \n\n\n\nThe people of the Twin Cities have shown the way for the whole country – to stop ICE’s reign of terror\, we need to SHUT IT DOWN. On Friday\, January 30\, join a nationwide day of no school\, no work and no shopping.  \n\n\n\nThe entire country is shocked and outraged at the brutal killings of Alex Pretti\, Renee Good\, Silverio Villegas González\, and Keith Porter Jr. by federal agents. While Trump and other right wing politicians are slandering them as “terrorists”\, the video evidence makes it clear beyond all doubt: they were gunned down in broad daylight simply for exercising their First Amendment right to protest mass deportation. Every day\, ICE\, Border Patrol and other enforcers of Trump’s racist agenda are going into our communities to kidnap our neighbors and sow fear. It is time for us to all stand up together in a nationwide shutdown and say enough is enough!” \n\n\n\nUPDATE: Shutdown from 2 pm at Tucson Federal Building downtown\, 300 W. Congress St. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Organizer: Defend Tucson! ¡Tucson se Defiende! Coalition \n\n\n\nJoin us in downtown Tucson on January 30\, 2026 for a public\, nonviolent solidarity action as part of the ICE OUT! Nationwide Shutdown. This action is in response to the nationwide shutdown call initiated by Black and Somali student organizations in Minnesota. \n\n\n\nCommunities across the country are taking collective action to demand justice\, accountability\, and an end to ICE violence. \n\n\n\nThis solidarity action will include a community gathering at the Tucson Federal Building\, brief reflections from DTTSD coalition partners and speakers\, music\, a cacerolazo (ka-seh-ro-LA-so) (pot-and-pan sound action) rally and march. All are welcome to attend for any portion of the event. \n\n\n\nBring your presence\, your voice\, and your solidarity. \n\n\n\n★ No work ★ No school ★ No shopping ★ \n\n\n\nCollective action matters. Be visible and be heard.” \n\n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: I have a doctor’s appt\, then open house at UA Lotus Lounge\, fka APASA. The students and staff will join in ICE Out at 1 pm on UA Mall. I have to drive and use Sun Tran bus. But otherwise\, no work\, school\, or shopping.

SUMMARY:AZPM Screening and panel discussion on The Librarians
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n“Librarians emerge as first responders in the fight for democracy and our First Amendment Rights. \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. If you are able\, we welcome a suggested donation of $10 to help support AZPM community events. \n\n\n\nIn Texas\, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQia+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate\, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of extremism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment\, threats\, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale. \n\n\n\nA panel discussion will follow this film. \n\n\n\nPanelists include: \n\n\n\n\nRebecca Ballenger – Associate Director World of Words\, College of Education\, University of Arizona\n\n\n\nKate DeMeester-Lane – Library Services Manager\, Pima County Public Library\n\n\n\nPaula Maez – Public Services\, Pima County Library\n\n\n\nMatthew Landon- Workforce and Economic Development Librarian\, Pima County Library\n\n\n\n\nWe encourage attendees to bring a new or gently used K–6th grade book to support of the TUSD Educational Enrichment Foundation.” \n\n\n\nRSVP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/join-azpm-for-a-screening-and-panel-discussion-of-the-librarians-tickets-1978317083652?aff=oddtdtcreator

Get to know her with her Ballotpedia questionaire and her interview with The Atlantic magazine (search for Bernadette’s name)\, and bring your questions to the QA that will follow her talk. \n\n\n\nYou Must Register in Advance for this Meeting:\n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/RVwlcgT1QButuo8FPZyITw\n\n\n\nBernadette’s biography: \n\n\n\nBernadette was raised in the rural Midwest and is the proud daughter of a Vietnam veteran and a Hungarian Refugee. She grew up with a deep respect for service\, sacrifice\, and the freedoms guaranteed by the United States Constitution. After college\, Bernadette was pulling late-night shifts at the local truck stop diner to help her family stay afloat. Soon after\, she climbed into the cab of a big rig and spent the next 27 years hauling freight across the country. She’s seenAmerica from the ground level\, truck stop to truck stop\, talking to factory workers\, single moms\, farmers\, and veterans—ordinary people ignored by the political elite in Washington. \n\n\n\nThrough relentless dedication\, Bernadette built her own trucking company. However\, when the economy tanked\, she watched everything she had fought for\, her business\, her trucks\, her livelihood\, slip away. Like millions of Americans\, she had to start over\, knowing firsthand what it feels like when politicians and corporations write the rules to benefit themselves\, while working families pay the price. \n\n\n\nFor 17 years\, Bernadette has shared life’s toughest roads with her husband\, an environmental services tech. They have a beautiful adopted daughter from China and have built a family rooted in faith\, sacrifice\, and perseverance. She’s a lifelong gun owner who believes in protecting our freedoms\, while finding common-sense solutions and not catering to political extremes. \n\n\n\nAfter watching Democrats lose last cycle and see how under Trump MAGA extremists are dedicated to tearing this country apart\, threaten Social Security\, attack women’s rights\, defund our public schools\, and sell out working people. Bernadette knew something had to change. Today\, our Republic and the U.S. Constitution\, for which our founding fathers fought to defend\, are under direct attack from politicians who put self-interest and power above country. \n\n\n\nBernadette is stepping up because enough is enough! For Democrats to win in Arizona this mid- term\, we need the support of blue-collar workers. It’s time the party fights to bring them back into the fold\, and who better to do that than a working-class woman herself. \n\n\n\nBernadette is a Democrat with a backbone\, someone who has hauled America’s goods through many storms\, fought for every paycheck\, and knows what it’s like to lose everything and have to rebuild. In Congress\, she’ll roll up her sleeves to fight for the people politicians have forgotten\, by protecting Social Security and Medicare\, securing our borders without losing our humanity\, making healthcare affordable\, defending reproductive freedom\, and ensuring thatworking- and middle-class families finally have someone on their side. \n\n\n\nShe’s not another politician. She’s one of us\, and she’s ready to fight like hell to protect Arizona’s 8th Congressional District and the Constitution.” \n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: Bernadette is running for CD 8 currently held by Republican attorney incumbent Abe Hamadeh\, elected in Nov. 2024. He also ran for Az Attorney General in Nov. 2022\, losing by 280 votes after a recount. \n\n\n\nCurrent voter registration stats on CD 8 in Phoenix from AZ SOS: Dems 113\,110; Republicans 194\,843; Other 153\,780.

To be added to our newsletter e-list\, send yourname and email address to paula@sustainabletucson.org. \n\n\n\nTuesday\, February 10\, 6:00 pmhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81015337872?pwd=9pghZcqVfkOJGLcLaQrbLFiFG7FZAU.1\n\n\n\n“We are fast approaching a special election to decide on RTA Next.  People on all sides of the dual-proposition initiative have compelling points to make about our current transportation system in Tucson and Pima County.  The challenge is not so much about moving people faster\, it’s about reducing the distance people must travel.  Visionaries in and out of planning departments are reframing mobility around convenience\, safety\, and neighborhood-scale access rather than continued roadway expansion. Consider:  84% of all trips in the Metro area are by car; Tucson drivers log over 8 billion miles annually.  This is travel we cannot afford to maintain\, given that most city and county roads are in poor condition with a $2–3 billion repair backlog. Local plans (Move Tucson\, RTA 2045\, Pima County) share emerging themes: prioritize safety\, equity\, and multimodal options; design from the sidewalk inward; and recognize that widening roads cannot solve congestion.  All seem to agree that ultimately our financial constraints and the urgency of carbon drawdown require a shift from auto-dependence to greener forms of mobility. Join us for an animated discussion of how RTA Next might fit into\, and/or postpone\, the sustainable future of mobility in southern Arizona. Our panel will include Logan Havens\, board member of the Living Streets Alliance\, leaders in the Complete Streets Initiative passed by Mayor & Council in February 2019 and advisors to the City’s climate action plan.”\n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: Transportation in Tucson issue is about the upcoming RTA Next special election on March 10\, 2026. Tres English of ST has published an argument against Prop. 418 (and 419) in the Sample Ballot & Publicity Pamphlet (page 75) which has been mailed to voters in Pima County. This is timely\, as early ballots go out on Feb. 11.
