SUMMARY:Asian Lunar New Year festival
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: This Asian Lunar New Year is celebrated in February by Chinese and Vietnamese cultures\, but we Japanese celebrate on January 1st like most other people. It’s the Year of the Horse for all of us in the Asian zodiac world (12 year cycles). \n\n\n\nI was a member of the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center for over 16 years\, from 2008 to 2025\, where I played Hong Kong Simplified mah jong. I also took classes in tai chi\, line dancing\, exercise. \n\n\n\nAll info at tucsonchinese.org.

SUMMARY:Rocque Perez\, candidate for LD20 Senator at DGT
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Please join us for a lively discussion and QA with recent Tucson City Council appointee\, and candidate for the Democratic nomination for AZ Senate in Legislative District 20\, Rocque Perez. Learn more about his campaign at RocquePerez.com.“Please join us for a lively discussion and QA with recent Tucson City Council appointee\, and candidate for the Democratic nomination for AZ Senate in Legislative District 20\, Rocque Perez. Learn more about his campaign at RocquePerez.com. \n\n\n\nYou Must Register in Advance for this Event:\n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/ZomEJTjbRW2bm0cApmCJmA\n\n\n\nRocque is a fourth-generation Tucsonan raised by a working-class single mother. His call to service was shaped by political violence against our most vulnerable communities. Committed to their defense\, he was appointed to the Tucson City Council in 2025. As Arizona’s first Gen Z official to serve in city or county government\, Rocque brought a fresh voice to the Tucson City Council. \n\n\n\nDuring his short tenure\, he directed over half a million dollars into small businesses\, nonprofits\, schools\, and neighborhood projects; protected Tucson’s water by stopping a proposed data center and defending the University of Arizona from federal overreach; supported low-barrier and affordable housing; and preserved critical investments in early childhood education for Sunnyside and Flowing Wells families. \n\n\n\nAs a State Senator\, Rocque would take his service to the Capitol to defend our rights—from freedom from discrimination\, to the right to organize\, earn a fair living\, and afford housing\, to a quality public education\, fair and accessible elections\, and systems that keep families whole.” \n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: Rocque was appointed to serve for 6 months as Ward 5 councilman in 2025\, upon retirement of long term Councilman Richard Fimbres. Rocque will face off in a Dem primary for this seat with LD20 Rep. Alma Hernandez\, running for senate. Current LD20 Senator Sally Gonzales is termed out\,now running for a House seat in same district. The other current LD20 Rep. is Betty Villegas\, running for re-election. \n\n\n\nRocque just came out against RTA Next in a guest opinion: https://tucson.com/opinion/column/article_f34a040a-bf55-47cb-b4e4-28f8680d525d.html

SUMMARY:International Women’s Day March
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“This 115th International Women’s Day\, Tucson is marching in solidarity for justice\, human dignity\, and hope.  Join us\, as neighbors of all genders\, faiths\, political parties and ethnic heritages unite to peacefully and lawfully send these resounding messages to our leaders:  \n\n\n\nWe demand justice for the survivors of sexual violence\, including accountability for the powerful and wealthy.  We will relentlessly protect ourselves\, our children\, and the survivors.  We will continue building a culture of mutual respect\, support and collaboration between the sexes.  We salute the men who advocate for and with us.  \n\n\n\nWe practice solidarity\, knowing history shows that the unified voice of a mere 3.5% of society results in meaningful change.  Our collective power as women has secured our right to vote\, own bank accounts\, businesses and homes\, and to make decisions about when and if we wish to procreate.  We will not go back.   \n\n\n\nWe defend human dignity.  We demand lawful and humane enforcement of immigration policies for adults and especially for children.  We condemn greed\, and insist on affordable medical treatment and education for all.   \n\n\n\nWe fiercely maintain hope for a brighter future.  While war at times may be necessary for self-preservation\, we denounce the forced acquisition of others’ lands and natural resources\, and the estrangement of our allies.  We prioritize peace\, the advancement of science\, art and technology\, and our continued intellectual development as human beings.   \n\n\n\nJoin us to walk\, stand\, hold signs\, chant\, dance or be silent as you feel called.  Together\, our voices multiply.  We cannot and shall not be intimidated\, paid off\, or suppressed.   \n\n\n\nTucson is OUR city\, Arizona is OUR state and the US is OUR home.  WE ARE the ones we’ve been waiting for. \n\n\n\nWHAT to WEAR: \n\n\n\nGreen for HOPE \n\n\n\nPurple for JUSTICE and DIGNITY \n\n\n\nWhite for SOLIDARITY \n\n\n\nCONDUCTWe will observe all traffic laws and avoid destructive activities\, to model for our leaders the integrity and rationality we demand of them.  We plan to stay out of the street\, and avoid blocking sidewalks and entrances to buildings or driveways.  \n\n\n\nROUTEStart on Congress Street in front of the Federal Building at 2 PM\, march east on Congress\, north on 4th Ave under bridge\, west on 6th St\, south on Stone\, west on Congress back to starting point.”

SUMMARY:PCDP Virtual town hall with ex-Border Patrol agent Jenn Budd
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime\n\n\n\nMonday\, March 9 \n\n\n\n5:30 – 6:30pm MST \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nVirtual event \n\n\n\nJoin from anywhere \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\n“Join PCDP for a virtual town hall with guest speaker Jenn Budd.  \n\n\n\nJenn Budd was a Senior Patrol Agent with the US Border Patrol in San Diego\, a Senior Intelligence Agent at San Diego Sector Headquarters and an Acting Supervisory Border Patrol Agent from 1995 to 2001 when she resigned in protest due to the rampant corruption and brutality she witnessed daily.  \n\n\n\nJenn is the author of the acclaimed memoir “Against the Wall: My Journey From Border Patrol Agent to Immigrant Rights Activist” (Heliotrope Books\, 2022). The book was selected as a finalist in Publishing Triangle’s prestigious Randy Shilts Award\,. and received an honorable mention in the Los Angeles Book festival Awards.” \n\n\n\nhttps://www.mobilize.us/pimadems/event/910282/?fbclid=IwY2xjawQMKNNleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEeFeN7IFE_aPgB4TAhO4nLxTYwMEAd7haBotK6MOhxNs5O2IT80dx_jcuodYo_aem_zs4CXSfQLL3BGGqErpyoZw \n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: My husband and I heard Jenn speak at the Historic Y on Jan. 25\, 2026. Her story is courageous\, compelling and jarring\, as she said that every woman she knew in the Border Patrol had been raped by other male agents\, as she was (as a lesbian). And yet she lasted 6 years\, was promoted.
