SUMMARY:Our Sustainable Transportation Future in Tucson at Sustainable Tucson meeting
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\nFebruary 10 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSustainable Tucson Monthly Meeting\, 2nd Tuesday\, 6:00-7:30 pm\, on Zoom. “Join us Tuesday\, February 10 at 6:00 pm for Sustainable Tucson’s monthly Sustainability Spotlight program. The topic will be Transportation in Tucson. Details\, speakers\, and the Zoom link for the meeting will be on our website www.sustainabletucson.org\, and on our Facebook and Meetup pages. To be added to our newsletter e-list\, send yourname and email address to paula@sustainabletucson.org. \n\n\n\nTuesday\, February 10\, 6:00 pmhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81015337872?pwd=9pghZcqVfkOJGLcLaQrbLFiFG7FZAU.1\n\n\n\n“We are fast approaching a special election to decide on RTA Next.  People on all sides of the dual-proposition initiative have compelling points to make about our current transportation system in Tucson and Pima County.  The challenge is not so much about moving people faster\, it’s about reducing the distance people must travel.  Visionaries in and out of planning departments are reframing mobility around convenience\, safety\, and neighborhood-scale access rather than continued roadway expansion. Consider:  84% of all trips in the Metro area are by car; Tucson drivers log over 8 billion miles annually.  This is travel we cannot afford to maintain\, given that most city and county roads are in poor condition with a $2–3 billion repair backlog. Local plans (Move Tucson\, RTA 2045\, Pima County) share emerging themes: prioritize safety\, equity\, and multimodal options; design from the sidewalk inward; and recognize that widening roads cannot solve congestion.  All seem to agree that ultimately our financial constraints and the urgency of carbon drawdown require a shift from auto-dependence to greener forms of mobility. Join us for an animated discussion of how RTA Next might fit into\, and/or postpone\, the sustainable future of mobility in southern Arizona. Our panel will include Logan Havens\, board member of the Living Streets Alliance\, leaders in the Complete Streets Initiative passed by Mayor & Council in February 2019 and advisors to the City’s climate action plan.”\n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: Transportation in Tucson issue is about the upcoming RTA Next special election on March 10\, 2026. Tres English of ST has published an argument against Prop. 418 (and 419) in the Sample Ballot & Publicity Pamphlet (page 75) which has been mailed to voters in Pima County. This is timely\, as early ballots go out on Feb. 11.

SUMMARY:Community Sing
DESCRIPTION:By Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n“Dear song lovers \n\n\n\nYou may argue that all songs are songs of love of one sort or another. \n\n\n\nValentine’s Day focuses on the need of humans to express their love to and for each other. Keeping lines of communication alive with possibility\,   \n\n\n\nSo the Free Community SING for February will explore the different ways love is sung about… the funny and foolish\, the careless and  helpless\, the false and true. All reaching for the truest love of all. \n\n\n\nI look forward to sing with you with all our heart.    \n\n\n\nKeep the beat\,” \n\n\n\nTed \n\n\n\nFREE COMMUNITY SING \n\n\n\nSUNDAY\, FEBRUARY 15 \n\n\n\n2:30-4 PM \n\n\n\nPIMA FRIENDS MEETING ROOM \n\n\n\n931 N 5TH AVE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\ninfo:520 628 9616 – ITZABOUTIME

Learn more about his campaign at RocquePerez.com.“Please join us for a lively discussion and QA with recent Tucson City Council appointee\, and candidate for the Democratic nomination for AZ Senate in Legislative District 20\, Rocque Perez. Learn more about his campaign at RocquePerez.com. \n\n\n\nYou Must Register in Advance for this Event:\n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/ZomEJTjbRW2bm0cApmCJmA\n\n\n\nRocque is a fourth-generation Tucsonan raised by a working-class single mother. His call to service was shaped by political violence against our most vulnerable communities. Committed to their defense\, he was appointed to the Tucson City Council in 2025. As Arizona’s first Gen Z official to serve in city or county government\, Rocque brought a fresh voice to the Tucson City Council. \n\n\n\nDuring his short tenure\, he directed over half a million dollars into small businesses\, nonprofits\, schools\, and neighborhood projects; protected Tucson’s water by stopping a proposed data center and defending the University of Arizona from federal overreach; supported low-barrier and affordable housing; and preserved critical investments in early childhood education for Sunnyside and Flowing Wells families. \n\n\n\nAs a State Senator\, Rocque would take his service to the Capitol to defend our rights—from freedom from discrimination\, to the right to organize\, earn a fair living\, and afford housing\, to a quality public education\, fair and accessible elections\, and systems that keep families whole.” \n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: Rocque was appointed to serve for 6 months as Ward 5 councilman in 2025\, upon retirement of long term Councilman Richard Fimbres. Rocque will face off in a Dem primary for this seat with LD20 Rep. Alma Hernandez\, running for senate. Current LD20 Senator Sally Gonzales is termed out\,now running for a House seat in same district. The other current LD20 Rep. is Betty Villegas\, running for re-election. \n\n\n\nRocque just came out against RTA Next in a guest opinion: https://tucson.com/opinion/column/article_f34a040a-bf55-47cb-b4e4-28f8680d525d.html
