SUMMARY:Meet Brent Newby\, candidate for AZ Supe for Public Instruction
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: So many Dems running for this position\, hard to remember them all: Dr. Michael Butts\, Dr. Teresa Leyba Ruiz\, and now Brent Newby. One of them will face off with incumbent Superintendent Tom Horne (but he is being challenged in the July 21 Republican primary by state Treasurer Kimberly Yee.) So Dem Newby is surely a “newbie” to this race.

Pennington St.\, Tucson\n\n\n\n\nGet ticketsCarolyn’s note: After a day of No Kings marching & protesting\, check out this evening fundraiser to raise $ for Coyote Task Force\, which has been assisting people to recover from mental illness for 32 years. It was one of my favorite restaurants when I worked downtown for Pima County Consolidated Justice Courts. My biological mother was mentally ill so I know what it’s like to live with mental illness. And she lived to age 95 and wouldn’t seek counseling.

SUMMARY:Enviros for JoAnna Mendoza
DESCRIPTION:Congressman Juan Ciscomani has been a disaster for the environment\, fully supporting the Trump agenda. Please join me and many other folks who support the environment\, public lands\, sustainability\, and climate action by supporting someone who\, with our help\, will replace him this November. Please support our environmentally focused efforts by becoming a co-host of Enviros for Mendoza. Jo Mendoza is a strong candidate: raised in rural Arizona\, a 30-year Army veteran (who was a drill instructor!)\, and — this is important — endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur fundraiser is a little different than others. You donate or pledge a set amount\, and we revise the invitation (see attached) to include your name and send it back to you. You can use this new invitation to invite family\, friends\, and colleagues. It doesn’t matter if you can attend or not (though you should attend — it will be fun and wonderful people will be there!). The event is on Sunday\, March 29\, 2 to 4 pm\, at a central Tucson location (a lovely home and yard).

SUMMARY:Justice of the Peace Kristel Ann Foster at DGT
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Join us on Zoom on March 30th at Noon for a discussion of the role of the Justice Courts in our civic and personal lives\, and the candidacy for re-election of Hon. Kristel Ann Fosterfor Judge\, Pima County Justice Court\, Precinct 8. Judge Foster will discuss these matters with us and take questions from the attendees. \n\n\n\nYou Must Register in Advance for this Event:\n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/jrZwEhF-T6SeaV0LjEBCIg\n\n\n\nJudge Foster’s campaign says: \n\n\n\nKristel Ann Foster was elected as a Justice of the Peace in 2022 and is up for re-election in 2026. Along with overseeing civil cases and a range of misdemeanor criminal cases\, like DUIs\, shoplifting and speed racing\, Kristel Ann presides over the Pima County Domestic Violence Specialty Court. This court serves defendants with second offenses or more serious charges of misdemeanor domestic violence. Judge Foster communicates weekly with local providers who support defendants in completing state mandated domestic violence treatment sessions. She requires defendants report back to court multiple times for compliance throughout their terms of probation and engages them in conversation aroundwhat they are learning and what impact this work is having on their lives. \n\n\n\nJudge Foster assures justice prevails\, and prioritizes services and supports\, not just penalties and punishment. She takes time to make sure everyone understands and that everyone leaves with more information than when they arrived. She follows the law and assures any interpretation is not skewed in favor or against any kind of individuals. Ultimately\, Kristel Ann honors the guiding principle that we are innocent until proven guilty and treats everyone with the respect and kindness that this deserves. \n\n\n\nMore information at https://www.fosterjusticepeace.com/ \n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: Prior to running for JP\, Kristel served 2 terms on TUSD Governing Bd. (2013 to 2020). She is an educator\, not an attorney. Kristel was elected JP in Nov. 2022 for Precinct 8.

Alma holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Public Health and a Master’s in Legal Studies from the University of Arizona. She also has advanced training at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health\, and a Juris Doctor from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. She has served as both a legislator and a professor for years. \n\n\n\nWidely recognized as the most effective Democrat in the legislature\, Alma has a proven track record of breaking through glass ceilings. Despite a Republican-controlled legislature\, Alma has passed ten laws\, secured millions for Southern Arizona\, strengthened labor unions\, advanced criminal justice reform\, protected reproductive freedom\, and expanded health care access. Her leadership is informed by personal experience navigating a broken juvenile justice system and by a lifelong commitment to ensuring every family has a fair shot. She has proudly serves as Chair of the Health Policy Committee for the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators\, helping shape health policy for Latino communities across the country. Her professional experience extends beyond the Capitol\, including humanitarian medical work in Ghana and Panama\, where she delivered care to women and children. Alma understands that policy is personal and that access to quality health care\, education\, and opportunity can change lives. \n\n\n\nA proud Mexican Jew and daughter of a construction worker and an immigrant from Mexico\, Alma never forgets where she comes from. She governs by delivering results and fighting every day for Southern Arizona. Alma is a champion for underserved communities and a proponent of bold\, common-sense leadership. She is proud of her record\, grateful for her community’s trust\, and ready to continue fighting for Southern Arizona and the values that make opportunity possible for all as the next State Senator of District 20.” \n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: Alma is facing a Dem primary on July 21 with former Ward 5 Councilman Rocque Perez\, who was appointed to that position in May\, 2025 after the retirement of long time Counciman Richard Fimbres. Alma is the sister of former House Rep. Daniel Hernandez and current LD 21 Rep. Consuelo Hernandez\, who is also running for re-election in 2026.

SUMMARY:Miranda Lopez\, candidate for LD 21 House at DGT
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Please join us on April 13th at Noon via Zoom for a lively discussion with Miranda Lopez who is running for Arizona State Representative in LD 21 about her campaign\, her district\, and her position on the pressing issues facing our state. \n\n\n\nYou Must Register in Advance for this Event:\n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/4ymUrLavTYe-or_i45z-Aw\n\n\n\nMiranda says of herself and her campaign: \n\n\n\nI graduated from the University of Arizona in 2018 (Bear Down!) and began my career working in grassroots organizing with the statewide Democratic Coordinated Campaign where I served as both a Field Organizer and later a Regional Organizing Director. \n\n\n\nIn 2021\, I was Executive Director of the Pima County Democratic Party\, where I focused on building local party and data infrastructure\, supporting candidates\, and strengthening community engagement across Southern Arizona. \n\n\n\nI started working for the Arizona Students’ Association in 2023 where I advocated for college students at the state legislature\, developed student leaders at the University of Arizona\, and mobilized young people to take action against harmful legislation. During this time I decided to return to school\, and along the way I joined United Campus Workers and was elected as their Treasurer. After working a fulltime job and being a fulltime student\, I finally graduated with my Masters in Public Administration in May of 2025. \n\n\n\nI believe real change happens when communities are organized\, informed\, and empowered — and that’s the approach I bring to everything I do.” \n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: This is a 4 way Dem primary for 2 House seats\, with Miranda challenging two incumbents\, Consuelo Hernandez and Stephanie Stahl Hamilton\, along with another political newcomer Maritza Higuera. The AZ Primary is on July 21\, 2026 this year. Consuelo is sister to LD 20 House Rep. Alma Hernandez\, now running for Senate in that LD\, and also former House Rep. Daniel Hernandez. Stephanie was a House Rep. in LD 10 prior to running for LD 21. \n\n\n\nShare this:

SUMMARY:Architect Bob Vint at Sustainable Tucson meeting
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApril 14 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm \n\n\n\n“Sustainable Tucson Monthly Meeting\, 2nd Tuesday\, 6:00-7:30 pm\, on Zoom. Join us Tuesday\, April 14 at 6:00 pm for Sustainable Tucson’s monthly Sustainability Spotlight program. Our speaker will be Robert Vint\, Assistant Professor of Architecture and longtime Tucson architect. He will speak on designing for the desert. Details and the Zoom link for the meeting will be on our website www.sustainabletucson.org\, and on our Facebook and Meetup pages. To be added to our newsletter e-list\, send your name and email address to paula@sustainabletucson.org. \n\n\n\nSustainable\, Affordable Building:Ancient & Modern Designs for Living in the Sonoran Desert\n\n\n\nTuesday\, April 14\, 2026\, 6:00-7:15 pmZoom: <https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88387731024?pwd=eiaCBZIjaB6iiHiRSAQiI2PPKUpsXx.1>\n\n\n\nMany of the solutions for climate and habitat resilience are hiding in plain sight.  Come to this month’s Sustainability Spotlight to learn about building design principles that help urban and rural communities weather extreme heat and dryness more effectively and\, ultimately\, at lower cost than “building as usual.” Our speaker\, Bob Vint\, has a decades-long career in architecture and is an active teacher in the classroom and in the field.  His latest field project involved a trip with UA architecture students to Agua Prieta\, Sonora\, where they designed and constructed housing for a local family in partnership with Rancho Feliz. Working alongside local builders and community members\, students helped complete a single-family home using the Highly-Johansen system\, a construction approach designed to perform in extreme desert climates.  This community-engaged learning model connects design education with real-world impact and is a model that may have real-world applications in a variety of endeavors.\n\n\n\nBOB VINT is a native Tucsonan who has practiced as a licensed architect in Arizona\, New Mexico\, Texas\, and Massachusetts.  He serves as preservation architect for the Mission San Xavier del Bac in Pima County\, the most significant historic building in Arizona (dating to 1783\, built of low-fire clay brick with lime mortar)\, as well as for the prehistoric Native American Cliff Dwellings of the Sierra Ancha in the Tonto National Forest (dating to 1290\, built of stone with mud mortar).  Additional projects of note include Linda Ronstadt’s Tucson residence\, the main entrance to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum\, and the mixed-use Plaza San Agustin in downtown Tucson.\n\n\n\nVint is author of a book on affordable housing in the Southwest published by the department of Housing & Urban Development\, Southwest Housing Traditions: Design\, Materials\, Performance (2005).  Since 2011\, he has been a member of the adjunct faculty at the University of Arizona’s College of Architecture\, Planning & Landscape Architecture.  His courses include the History & Theory of Urban Design and Arid Region Urbanism\, featuring field trips throughout the Southwest.”\n\n\n\nhttps://capla.arizona.edu/directory \n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: Bob Vint has worked on the historic San Xavier del Bac Mission and on the Ranchhouse at Agua Calente Park\, where I was a board member for five years.

SUMMARY:Renew Tucson Summit
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRenew TucsonInvesting in People\, Infrastructure\, and Well-Being\n\n\n\n“A Summit for Thinkers\, Doers\, and Citizen ActivistsPresented by Sustainable TucsonThursday\, April 23\, 9 am to 5 pm Friday\, April 24\, 9 am to 1 pmAt the Azurite conference hall\, Pima Community College (PCC) downtownSponsored by PCC’s Division of Applied TechnologyMark your calendar for a mind-opening gathering to learn about\, discuss\, and plan for innovative approaches to invest in both people and infrastructure. Founding concept: increasing our local economy’s energy and resource productivity can enable more jobs – at living wage and better – while building a more robust economy and reducing the strain on our local ecology.  Speakers and facilitators will include nationally-known resource and energy economists\, plus local leaders adopting creative and collaborative solutions to serve generations to come. The Summit will explore community priorities\, government agencies’ resources\, and local business/industry capabilities to identify specific infrastructure projects\, policies\, and programs that we can fund and implement together.Federal support is uncertain; State and City budgets are tight.  But Tucson can invest in itself – creating local jobs\, reducing household costs\, and building the infrastructure that makes us more resilient. We’re deepening connections among community\, government\, and local industry to promote investments that upgrade and build sustainable infrastructure\, which in turn will create jobs\, cut costs\, and both deepen and keep investment in Tucson.Registration opens this week.  See our website:  https://www.renewtucson.org/.”When community priorities align with government capacityand funding availability\, things actually happen

She broke onto the national writing scene in 1981 with the landmark text\, This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color\, co-edited with another famed Chicana writer\, Gloria Anzaldúa. The text was adopted quickly onto reading lists of Ethnic and Gender Studies programs at universities and colleges across the country and has entered the canon. Her work is also widely used in English\, Writing\, Theater\, and Humanities programs. She has published numerous books and collections\, for which she has won many prestigious awards (please see bios\, below)\, all of which makes her one of the most influential Chicana thinkers and cultural workers today. Throughout her work\, Cherríe Moraga thinks critically about how race/ethnicity\, class\, gender\, and sexuality intersect and interact with each other to critique systems of oppression and to advocate for social justice\, el mero mole of the EGTSS Department and our courses.  By accepting our invitation\, we are deeply honored by her solidarity toward our students\, our community\, and Dolores Huerta.
