SUMMARY:Survival & Resistance mural unveiling
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRemembering the Southside’s Environmental Justice Movement is a yearlong commemoration that honors the work of Tucson’s south side community\, which beginning in the 1980s\, organized a historic fight against trichloroethylene (TCE) groundwater contamination and environmental racism. Through free community programming across Pima County\, Survival and Resistance will celebrate the undertold story of residents that fought for decades for the health of their community and their drinking water. Working in partnership with those directly impacted\, this project celebrates south side resistance\, survival\, and healing. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1014352217424854?acontext=%7B%22event_action_history%22%3A[%7B%22mechanism%22%3A%22your_upcoming_events_unit%22%2C%22surface%22%3A%22bookmark%22%7D]%2C%22ref_notif_type%22%3Anull%7D

SUMMARY:Clara Platte and Jon Hill\, candidates for Az Corporation Commission at DGT
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Please join us for a discussion of Democratic candidate team Clara Pratte and Jonathan (sic Jonathon) Hill for Arizona Corporation Commission. We will discuss the role and importance for the daily lives of Arizona and our economy and Jon’s and Clara’s plans to take two seats back for Democrats of the five seat commission\, which is currently solidly Republican MAGA dominated. \n\n\n\nYou Must Register in Advance for this Event:\n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/wnL7v5ivRi6lanQ4g-ShCQ\n\n\n\nClara Pratte:  \n\n\n\nClara Pratte built her career on public service and is now a successful small business owner and entrepreneur as well as a mom to two boys. She is running to lower costs for Arizonans\, restore integrity to the Arizona Corporation Commission\, strengthen consumer protections\, and ensure Arizona urgently harnesses its clean energy potential before it’s too late. Clara is a member of the Navajo Nation and grew up on the nation in a small town called Lupton on the Arizona / New Mexico border. Her family did not have access to utilities or running water until she was in middle school\, so this race to oversee Arizona’s utilities is personal. Her career spans decades of successful work advocating for tribal communities and small businesses\, including serving under three U.S. Presidents and four Navajo Nation Presidents. \n\n\n\nJonathon Hill:Jonathon brings a unique perspective to the Commission\, drawing from an unconventional yet highly relevant background. He is neither a politician nor a businessman—he is a scientist\, an engineer\, and a proud Arizonan.  Jonathon has spent the past 18 years at Arizona State University\, working on several NASA space missions focused on Mars\, Jupiter\, and asteroids. He has earned a master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering and a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences\, both from ASU.” \n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: ACC is currently represented by 5 Republican Commissioners. Jonathon Hill ran for ACC in Nov. 2024 and came in 5th of 8 candidates for 3 seats. Clara Platte is a political newcomer. Another Dem political newcomer Derrick Espadas is also running for ACC. In 2026 there will be 2 seats available. More on ACC: https://www.azcc.gov/

SUMMARY:"The Environment in 2026: At the State Capital & Beyond" at Sustainable Tucson meeting
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\nThe Environment in 2026: At the State Capital and Beyond\n\n\n\nJanuary 6\, 2026  •  6:00https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87556154931?pwd=56TlanklJnNjKt628HE2fa523Acy5D.1\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Join us on Zoom\, Tuesday\, January 6\, at 6:00 pm for our Sustainability Spotlight\, “The Environment in 2026: At the State Capital and Beyond.” We expect that the coming year will bring challenges to many important aspects of local and state life\, especially looking at environment\, health\, and related concerns. The program will look ahead at what can be expected in coming months from state (and some national) legislative and administrative actions\, with a focus on what will have particular impact on Tucson and Southern AZ – and what we can do.  Our panel to date includes State Senator Priya Sundareshan (LD 18)\, Sandy Bahr\, director of the Sierra Club’s Grand Canyon Chapter\, and Kirsten Engel\, Chief\, Environmental Protection Unit of the AZ Attorney General’s Office. They will preview the policies\, places\, and programs that Arizonans will need to protect and promote.  Their complementary perspectives will give us a full picture of what we can and should do – as individuals and as an organization – to support an agenda of environmental protection and justice as we work for a sustainable future.   Following our guests’ comments\, we expect a lively question & answer session\, with a shared conversation on how to maintain and restore momentum on this work.”

SUMMARY:January 8th Memorial gathering
DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\nThe January 8 Memorial is surrounded with blooming Palo Verde trees in the spring.\n\n\n\nGathering will mark 15-year anniversary of Jan. 8 shooting\n\n\n\nPIMA COUNTY – Jan. 8\, 2026\, marks 15 years since the tragic shooting that killed six people and wounded 13 others in northwest Tucson. At 10 a.m.\, Thursday\, Jan. 8\, Pima County officials\, survivors and community members will reflect and gather at the Jan. 8 Embrace Memorial adjacent to the Historic Pima County Courthouse\, 115 N. Church Ave. \n\n\n\nDistrict 1 Supervisor Rex Scott\, Pima County Board of Supervisors\, will offer opening remarks at the commemoration. \n\n\n\nThe event also will include: \n\n\n\n\nPresentation of flags by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department honor guard\n\n\n\nPrayer and reading of the names by Rev. Joe Fitzgerald\, Banner-University Medical Center chaplain\n\n\n\nBell ringing at exactly 10:10 a.m. to coincide with when the first shots were fired\n\n\n\nRemarks by former U.S. Congressman Ron Barber\, who was injured in the shooting\, and Tucson Mayor Regina Romero\n\n\n\n\nThe Memorial\, which is located just west of the Historic Courthouse in El Presidio Park\, 115 N. Church Ave.\, and called “Embrace\,” tells the story of the lives lost and people wounded at the hand of a gunman on January 8\, 2011\, at Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ “Congress on Your Corner” event in Tucson. It features sloping walls that depict symbols embodying the values and interests held by each of the six people who died and the 13 survivors\, including Giffords\, who was seriously injured in the attack. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, the Memorial showcases symbols dedicated to the community of first responders\, Tucson’s history\, and the aspirations of the community for the future. The Memorial also features gardens named for each of the six people who were killed. \n\n\n\nMore information about the Embrace Memorial is available at the Southern Arizona and Visitor Center website.“ \n\n\n\nCarolyn’s note: Has it been 15 years since Gabby was almost assassinated? She is now the wife of Arizona US Senator Mark Kelly. I remember her talented Congressional Aide I knew who were killed that day: Gabe Zimmerman\, dead at age 30. Plus I also knew some of the injured: Gabby of course and her District Director Ron Barber\, who later became a Congressman for a short while\, and Pam Simon\, another Congressional aide. My husband had taught Suzi Hileman\, a constituent who was shot as well several times. And unfortunately I also knew Amy Loughner\, mother of the shooter\, who was/is? the Mgr. of Agua Caliente Park in Pima County.

DESCRIPTION:by Carolyn Classen\, blogger \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nMenlo Park \n\n\n\n325 N Grande Ave \n\n\n\nTucson\, AZ 85745 \n\n\n\nMap Links: \n\n\n\nOSMGoogleApple \n\n\n\nOrganizer: Community Organized \n\n\n\n“Gather to discuss how we can support and defend each other from ICE. Everyone has something to offer. If you aren’t sure\, please come. Spanish/English interpretation \n\n\n\nWith less than a day’s notice\, the first ICE OUT Community Assembly brought together over 200 people to plan how we will defend our communities and get rid of ICE for good.  The collective strength we felt has inspired us to continue these assemblies each month (second saturdays) so we can refine and grow our efforts together long-term. In the second assembly\, we will emphasize neighborhood-level organizing and develop tangible next steps\, so we all leave knowing what to do next. \n\n\n\nAs the same people commanding ICE increase their violence abroad\, it’s as important as ever that we build our capacity to resist. This assembly runs on people power\, so please invite your friends\, family and neighbors and consider printing out some flyers to distribute around town.”
