All proceeds from Tucson Lunafest 2016 admissions and raffle ticket sales will benefit WOSAC and the Breast Cancer Fund.
Get ready for an entertaining and enlightening evening of short films made by, for and about women. This annual nationally-touring film festival brings the best short films from around the world together for one special night of cinematic excitement! This year’s program of EIGHT brand-new films will compel discussion, make you laugh, tug at your heartstrings and motivate you to make a difference in your community. Incredibly diverse in style and content, Lunafest is united by a common thread of exceptional and inspiring storytelling – by, for and about women.
This year’s films:
Balsa Wood – A light-hearted slice-of-life about two mixed race siblings visiting their extended Filipino family for lunch. (Dir. by Dominique Lecchi, 2014, UK, 10 mins., Not Rated)
Beach Flags – In this animated short, a young Iranian lifeguard, determined to participate in an international competition in Australia, experiences an unexpected obstacle when a new team member arrives. (Dir. by Sarah Saidan, 2014, France/Iran, in Persian with subtites, 14 mins., Not Rated)
Boxeadora – One woman defies Fidel Castro’s ban on female boxing to follow her dreams of Olympic glory and becomes Cuba’s first female boxer. (Dir. by Meg Smaker, 2015, USA/Cuba, in Spanish with subtitles, 17 mins., Not Rated)
Finding Jane – Through the eyes of a deaf woman just diagnosed with breast cancer, communication’s role in understanding one another is explored. (Dir. by Anna Schumaker, 2014, USA, in American Sign Language and English, 21 mins., Not Rated)

Very inspiring and unusual films for this year’s Lunafest — a deaf woman diagnosed with breast cancer, mixed Filipino children visiting a female relative in England, a woman boxer determined to continue her sport in Cuba (where women are not allowed to box professionally), a transgendered girl who knew she was a boy at age 4; a Finnish housewife encountering a Black helper in the parking garage; and an animated film of Iranian girls competing in a track race and helping each other win for the nationals. Amazing to see girls & women depicted in these movies, with international themes of cooperation and friendship. Bonus was a local film “Not Your Usual Bedtime Story” openly interviewing singles and couples (gay & straight) about sexual practices.
