Trump Suggests Delaying the 2020 Elections

On a day when the Nation lays to rest a Civil Rights Icon and Esteemed Public Servant, the 2016 Popular Vote Loser suggested Delaying the November 3 Elections.

In a morning tweet (what else,) Mr. Trump posted:

Furthermore, while the country honored the legacy of John Lewis, the Chief Executive Demagogue boasted that he had done away with Obama Era Fair Housing Policies in the suburbs.

What an ass but I digress.

The readers need to be reassured. Trump can dream about delaying the elections but he can not. He does not have the power to do so.

People should also be asking Individual One why he thinks it safe to reopen schools that have a 180 to a 200-day instructional calendar and not safe to have an election on November 3, 2020.

This country has held duly scheduled elections during the Civil War, great economic upheavals, World War One, the Influenza Pandemic, World War Two, and the chaos that was 1968.

There is no reason the elections on November 3, 2020, can not take place.

Trump is also peddling the bull fecal matter that there will be a widespread vote by mail fraud and claims absentee balloting is different (it is not.)

Many states like Colorado, Utah, Oregon, Arizona, California, and Washington have had extensive or total mail-in balloting for decades with little to no instances of voter fraud.

This is a time where mail-in options should be increased and encouraged, not falsely slandered.

Also, for the people who do prefer to vote in person, public servants in the 50 states should expand early voting opportunities, locations, and hours to reduce congested voter traffic.

Even Arizona’s Doug Ducey, in a narrow executive order on July 22, expanded polling locations in “state-owned assets.”

Ducey still should have made it possible, as EJ Montini wrote in one of his columns, to have an all mail-in election.

On a day that the nation honors and lays to rest the Civil Rights Icon and Esteemed Public Servant John Lewis, the people should be discussing expanding voter rights and access not taking them away like the President of Betrayal proposes.

November 3, 2020, is 96 days away.

  1. Arch conservative and Federalist Society co-founder Steven Calabresi in an op-ed for the New York Times today says Trump’s idea to delay the election is fascist and that he must be impeached immediately.

Remember, the Federalist Society opposed Trump’s impeachment for all of his articulated crimes and abuses of power in office. They were OK with actual crimes and constitutional offenses.

So this tweet is what does it for Calabresi? Color me suspicious, there is something else behind this.

“[I] am frankly appalled by the president’s recent tweet seeking to postpone the November election,” he writes. “Until recently, I had taken as political hyperbole the Democrats’ assertion that President Trump is a fascist. But this latest tweet is fascistic and is itself grounds for the president’s immediate impeachment again by the House of Representatives and his removal from office by the Senate.”

“Trump might try to postpone the election. That’s unconstitutional”, https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/30/opinion/trump-delay-election-coronavirus.html

    • They may see the writing on the wall (although nothing is certain) and realize that they are not going to get any more judicial nominees through him any way other than the ones that are still in the confirmation process. Just speculating.

      • A lot of Republicans have been hoping for an offramp for a long time, Calabresi put on his turn signal but he’s not worried about Trump’s base.

Eventually the GOP will pretend Trump never happened, just like they did with Bush, but not until the end of January, 2021.

Until then the cowards in the GOP won’t do jack, and they’re already practicing “I’m not looking back I’m looking forward” one liners for next year.

        • GOP cowards aren’t to worried post-2020. They’ll just create another fake movement to forget the Vulgar Talking Yam just like they created the Teabaggers to forget Bush the Lesser. And the MSM will eat it up just like they did in 2009 & 2010.

I despise these “people”. They got my disdain the the old fashioned way…they earned it.

  2. At a Senate hearing today, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo – who attended Harvard Law School – “suggested the final decision on any postponement of the election hinges upon whether Attorney General Bill Barr and others at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) can find a legal justification to change the date.”

NO, it does not. “Legal Experts Erupt After Mike Pompeo Says Bill Barr Will Determine Whether to Postpone the Election”, https://lawandcrime.com/2020-election/legal-experts-erupt-after-mike-pompeo-says-bill-barr-will-determine-whether-to-postpone-the-election/?utm_source=mostpopular

Legal experts fumed about and dismissed Pompeo’s suggestion.

“The Constitution gives Congress the power to set a date for the election, Congress has already set a date, and the states are going to run the election process like every other cycle,” national security attorney Bradley P. Moss told Law&Crime in an email. “DOJ can issue all the opinions it wants and the President can issue all the tweets he wants: it changes nothing.”

University of Texas Law Professor Steve Vladeck was a bit more animated in his response.

“NO. THEY. WON’T,” he tweeted in response to Pompeo’s suggestion that DOJ officials will be the final arbiters on the issue.

    • If Trump pushes the issue and we have no election, Pelosi becomes POTUS at the end of January by law.

I got no beef with that.

If Trump won’t leave the White House we’ll just wait a day or two until he goes golfing and move all his crap out onto the lawn.

If Pence won’t leave we’ll just send some strippers to the Observatory.

      Male strippers.

      (Scooby Doo running sound effect)

      • If the election results are up in the air on January 20, 2021 is there a duly elected and sworn in Congress? I suppose the “carryover” Senators would still be in office but what about the other Senators and the whole House?

          • David—Sorry to be pushing on this but if there are no election results then there are no declared winners or there are multiple and conflicting winners each declared by someone. In the case there are some declared winners that would likely leave some seats unfilled—would Congress just go ahead with a those seats that are filled acting as though they were the whole body?
There is an excellent report on all this done by a group called MapLight but it still left me with questions.

          • The great majority of the seats will be determined before January. Disputed seats will remain unoccupied until a winner is declared. As someone wrote on the Presidential level, the Speaker of the House (Nancy Pelosi hopefully) would become President if there is no determined legal winner on January 20 in the Presidential race.

        • Mark your calendar: for the presidential race, all state recounts and court contests over presidential election results must be completed by December 8, 2020 (shades of Bush v. Gore in 2000). The meeting of electors in the Electoral College is December 14, 2020.
