“Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins” at the Loft Cinema

Starts Friday, September 20 at Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway Blvd. Tucson

Free Loft Cinema Member screening on Friday, September 20 at 7:30pm.

“As journalism comes under attack with constant cries of “fake news,” this hugely entertaining documentary about the fierce and fearless writer and social commentator Molly Ivins reminds us of how wit and well-channeled vitriol can speak truth to power.

Born into a wealthy Texas family and possessed of a razor-sharp pen, Ivins refused to conform to the restrictive Southern belle stereotypes and challenged the stuffy white boys’ club that defined journalism in the ’60s and ’70s. Filmmaker Janice Engel’s feature debut skillfully captures the intelligence, humor, and indefatigable spirit of a true pioneer.  (Dir. by Janice Engel, 2019, USA, 93 mins., Not Rated)”

  1. Hilarious, hard hitting documentary about the life & times of journalist Molly Ivins, who died from breast cancer at age 62. She grew up in Texas, graduated from Smith College and worked as a journalist at NYTimes, the Denver Bureau, before returning home to Texas. Her incredible wit and veracity were clearly shown in this movie, as her family, friends, co-workers were interviewed. Indeed she seemed fearless and a “political prophet” of the times, esp. of her criticism of former Pres. Bush, whom she called “Shrub” in her book. Don’t miss this movie at the Loft, as it will only be there till Oct 3.
