The Case for Amy Klobuchar as the “Goldilocks” Democratic Presidential Candidate

On the ABC news show This Week with George Stephanopoulos, analyst Matthew Dowd, after the recent debate performances of Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, called her “the Goldilocks” Presidential Candidate.

Is Senator Klobuchar the Presidential Candidate that is just right for the Voters?

Maybe.

Senator Klobuchar represents the left of the center wing of the Democratic Party and moderate center of the political spectrum that can appeal to the voters Democrats need to win in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Virginia, Iowa, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Colorado, and Arizona.

She has won the blue and red areas of Minnesota.

She has reached out to urban, rural, and suburban communities.

In other words, she can win a national Presidential Election.

During the debates and on the campaign trail, she presented herself as a person of strong policy awareness, sound positive character, and optimistic temperament. She will have to deal with the reports that she has been hard with past members of her staff but voters have not seen any indication of that this campaign season. But considering how Donald Trump treats his people, this should not be a difficult task.

The above two qualities could be helpful to Democratic Senate candidates like Mark Kelly in Arizona, John Hickenlooper in Colorado, and the other Democrats in states like  Arkansas, Maine, Iowa, North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina. Her ability to win and convey a positive-optimistic image on the campaign trail could provide large coattails for Democratic candidates down the ballot for the United States Senate, House, and state and local offices.

Finally, Klobuchar has a pragmatic progressive agenda (please click here to see the program) that includes programs on infrastructure, rural area revitalization, a pubic health care option, tackling climate change, and promoting equality. This legislation could be passed, especially if the Senate reverts back to Democratic control through the reconciliation process. Senators like Kyrsten Sinema, Joe Manchin, and (if reelected Doug Jones) should not have any problems with it.

Senator Amy Klobuchar may be Hillary Clinton without the baggage. She has a progressive program that could win the approval of the base and the vital center. She has consistently performed well in the debates and has received praise for her presentation.

The key, however, is for her to start winning and competing well in primaries and caucuses so the people will firmly conclude she is “just right” for the country.

  1. Yeah, true. But a white prosecutor with what we know about her record so far is going to have a race problem if word gets out. And that does seem to be happening although social media is busy with Bloomberg right now.

    Then there’s Joe Biden getting a pass from black folks on the 1994 Crime Bill, but I think there are a couple of reasons for that. His eight years with Obama were a kind of redemption. Also, he IS that white guy who beats Trump, closer to the sure thing than say Pete and much closer than the women.
    That perception of Biden has, of course, diminished recently but I think it explains the forgiveness.

    Strangely enough, Bloomberg seems to be getting some of the same, benefiting from the perception that he is creating with his anti-Trump ads that he is THAT white guy. And Bloomberg has a race problem as big as Dallas.

    …The Minneapolis NAACP, Black Lives Matter Twin Cities and other racial justice groups recently called on Klobuchar to suspend her presidential campaign following a shocking investigation by the Associated Press. The AP report centered on the case of Myon Burrell, an African-American teenager who was sentenced to life in prison over the 2002 murder of 11-year-old Tyesha Edwards. Klobuchar led the case against Myon Burrell when she was Hennepin County’s district attorney, but the AP report says she may have mishandled the case and that Burrell could be innocent. The Associated Press report shows how prosecutors had no DNA or fingerprints tying Burrell to the murder and that they relied on jailhouse informants, some of whom have since recanted their testimonies. Burrell has always maintained his innocence. On the campaign trail, Klobuchar has cited the jailing of Burrell as one of her achievements and brought up the conviction during a debate in September.

  4. Amy’s record as a prosecutor has mostly escaped scrutiny because she wasn’t polling high enough until recently. But Amy is going to have a race problem if this goes mainstream…

    • Many black voters see Trump as an existential threat. I do too, but for them it is different. All they want right now is the candidate with the most certainty of beating Trump.

      It’s interesting that Stop and Frisk billionaire Bloomberg bought his way in, but his anti-Trump commercials are apparently working because that’s all he’s got, at least so far.

      Note that all the women including Liz are polling the lowest in SC.

      I strongly suspect Biden will still win SC, but not by a huge margin.

      • You’re not going to find a prosecutor that doesn’t have something dirty in their past.

        But damn, if there’s an innocent person doing time she should be demanding a new trial.

  5. Just read that her environmental grade is D for scary pipeline, fossil fuel reasons. Will check her website but that rules her our for me.

      Klobuchar earned a 96% lifetime score from the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and a perfect 2018 rating from the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund.

      No politician has a perfect record, but those numbers hardly sound like “D”s.

  6. In my preferences Senator Klobuchar would be third in line after the Senator Professor & Bernie. Any of those three would be great.

  7. I’m fine with Amy, Pete, anyone is better than Trump.

    But I’m not invested in the primaries, because I learned in 2016 that the corporate media is going to pick the candidate for me.

    So wake me up in a few months and let me know who they chose.

    Probably not too soon to start thinking about firing Tom Perez, though.

    • An amendment, though I would prefer the corporate candidate isn’t Mediocre White Man Joe Biden.
