Attended this play this afternoon – a one man show on the campaign trail – fictional 93 year old John Parker, a “new American candidate” who chronicles the rise of democracy in America vs. the Rule of One (dictatorship). His historical monologue concentrates on the wars – Revolutionary, War of 1812, Civil War, then the evolution of the 2 party system, the Industrial “Gilded Age” of prosperity, WWII & creation of middle class, the rise of civil rights (blacks, women) and the I.R.S. tax code. Finally he bemoans the last 45 years (1970 to 2015) when corporate greed took over, when corporations paid less & less taxes, the Citizens United lawsuit when dark $ for campaigns was allowed. In the final analysis he advocates eliminating the income tax so the Government will learn how to better tax people’s spending. Parker encourages the audience to fight for democracy, that’s it time for a new American candidate to help the masses rise again. Parker speaks with passion, knowledge and candid honesty, but one wonders…is it too late for our changing America? 2 more weeks of these performances at this new theater, just west of I-10, south side, behind the GLH Hotel, in their events center.
