Arizonans Make Water at Top Cause on Arizona Gives Day

Watershed Management Group earns top honor and big prize for second year running on Arizona Gives Day.

Yesterday Arizonans donated to support charities throughout the state for the 2nd annual Arizona Gives Day. Water rose to the top as an essential issue with Tucson-based Watershed Management Group coming in 2nd place in the Most Dollars Raised category, beating out many larger organizations.

Watershed Management Group (WMG) raised over $38,000 dollars through this 24-hour online campaign. Almost $1.4 million was raised to support the 1,277 participating Arizona charities.

“Watershed Management Group is thrilled at the outpouring of community support to ensure we have the water and other precious resources to thrive in the desert while preserving our natural heritage,” shares Lisa Shipek, WMG’s Executive Director.

In the first annual Arizona Gives Day, WMG raised the most dollars of any Arizona non-profit, winning them the $15,000 prize. This year’s second place finish earns them a $10,000 prize.

WMG’s programs are action-based—teaching people to make small changes that will make bigger impacts in the community. One of their most popular programs, in Tucson and Phoenix, is the Green Living Co-op, which uses a barn-raising model to build water-harvesting features, native landscapes, and edible gardens at people’s homes. Their educational and policy work spans a wide array of environmental needs including conserving water, growing our urban forest, building soil to grow food, and restoring our aquifer and rivers.

You can learn more about WMG and get involved by attending one of their many free workshops or presentations.  For Earth Day, community members are invited to attend a hands-on workshop followed by a happy hour party on April 19that their Living Lab and Learning Center, 1137 N Dodge Blvd, Tucson.  Visit watershedmg.org for more information.

Carolyn’s note: I blogged about this state-wide  Arizona Gives Day (in its 2nd year) and Watershed Management had 212 donors donate $38,261 in 24 hours, plus winning that 2nd place prize of $10,000.  Other Southern Arizona top prize getters were Ben’s Bells (#1 most donors overall with 673 unique donors) for total of $15,673, plus the Humane Society of So. Az (earned $25,893, #4 in overall dollars), and Tucson Wildlife Center (earned $21,477 plus #5 in overall dollars). I received lots and lots of messages via email and on FB from various groups mentioning Arizona Gives Day.

Congrats to all, and thanks to all who donated to help these Arizona nonprofits.
