How to woo minorities, Republican style

by David Safier

The Republican Party has figured out how to get minority groups to vote for its candidates. It just has to "persuade them to think of themselves primarily as Americans." That's a quote from a discussion between Jonah Goldberg and John O'Sullivan.

The mind reels. If only those minorities would think more like Republicans real Americans!

The quote is pulled from a video of an interview with Goldberg and O'Sullivan, so I don't know everything they said. But a longer quote containing that line is interesting on another level. It doesn't include African Americans as part of their persuasion campaign, only Hispanics and Asians.

“I see that the way we will get the Hispanics and the other groups, the Asians, as part of the Republican Coalition is to get them first part of the great American Coalition. Make them think of themselves, not make but, persuade them to think of themselves primarily as Americans."

I guess in their minds, there's no way to persuade African Americans, most of whom can trace their American ancestry back much farther than the rest of us, "to think of themselves primarily as Americans."
