If this doesn’t scare the hell out of you . . .

by David Safier

If you have felt the slightest bit complacent about what's going on in Arizona, two articles on the Star's front page should end that.

The Star has badly mis-headed the Howard Fischer article about a whole raft of anti-immigrant legislation. Hell, let's be honest. It's anti-Hispanic legislation. It includes Pearce's Omnibus Immigration Bill — which Tedski aptly retitles the Ominous Immigration Bill. I won't even attempt to summarize the legislation.

Then there is the anti-abortion bill that is supposed to target "genocide" abortions, meaning abortions for reasons of race or gender. It's hard to imagine a more cynical bill. Its dual purpose is to further limit legal abortion in Arizona and to find a way to put Planned Parenthood out of business by accusing it of performing these types of abortions.

Seriously. We are headed in a very, very frightening direction in this state if this kind of legislation goes through. There is no way to overstate the damage these people hope to inflict.

A CAMPAIGN PROMISES NOTE: I heard Al Melvin say at a campaign debate that he was only interested in three things: "Jobs, jobs, jobs." As of yet, the state legislature has done nothing about the first three of his concerns.
