SB1070 Update: Our self-proclaimed “truth teller” Guv is right about one thing

by David Safier

When the Accidental Guv was in Sierra Vista on July 4, she demonstrated that just seeing her lips move isn't a guarantee she's lying. She said, correctly, some people are "getting misinformation" about SB1070.

The problem is, she's Arizona's Old Faithful of fibbing, one of the prime sources of immigration misinformation, but she says the misinformation is coming from the anti-SB1070 side. So she's either misinformed about the source of misinformation, or she's lying.

Here is one of Brewer's bits of misinformation:

. . . a person’s civil rights are protected by the bill, which goes into effect on July 29, [Brewer] added.

A number of legal scholars, whom she did not name, have looked at the law and say there is no racial profiling or civil rights violations, Brewer said.

No racial profiling in the law? Wrong. If Brewer read the bill, then had someone who is an objective legal scholar explain it to her, she would know, the sentence that taketh away racial profiling giveth it back in the next phrase.

And no, Jan, Russell Pearce is not a legal scholar, in case you were wondering. And Kris Kobach, the guy who wrote the legislation, is not "a number of legal scholars," and he would have a stake in giving you bad information. Can you name some other legal scholars who say there's no racial profiling in the bill?

And then there's her statement that a majority of illegal immigrants are involved in the drug trade, which she would retract publicly if she were interested in accurate information getting out there.

About a recent statement she made, Brewer said the majority of illegal immigrants coming into the United States also are bringing in drugs as a way to pay for their movement north.

The governor re-emphasized her statement, saying the truth is the drug cartels now control the majority of movement of illegal immigrants, and that means the human smuggling traffic also involves transporting drugs.

Incredible. Every statistic says only a small percentage of immigrants apprehended near the border are carrying drugs, but Brewer is doubling down on her — I can't even call it misinformation in this case — her blatant lie.

No need to journey to Yellowstone if you live in Arizona. We've got our own geyser who can be relied on to spew hot air and noxious gas into the state's atmosphere on a regular basis.
