Has it truly been 9 years since I joined this group of good bloggers at Blog for Arizona? I remember it being Feb. 11, 2014 and I had been asked to come on by the mysterious, long-time blogger AZ Blue Meanie, to post community and political events. Here was my chance to continue the community oriented theme of “Carolyn’s Community” elsewhere than www.tucsoncitizen.com. I actually enjoy posting about progressive and liberal events for people in Arizona, so it’s not a volunteer job I dislike.
So, anyway, happy new year of the rabbit 2023 and let’s endeavor to keep trying to elect good Democrats to office.
The City of Tucson election is up this year, so it will be time to elect the Mayor, three Council members in Wards 1, 2 and 4. These offices are currently held by all Democrats: Mayor Regina Romero, who is running for re-election. (She is married to Ruben Reyes, District Director for Democratic CD 7 Congressman Raul Grijalva); Ward 1 Councilmember Lane Santa Cruz; Ward 2 Councilmember Paul Cunningham (son of former State Senator George Cunningham); Ward 4 Councilmember Nikki Lee.
I hear from the political grapevine that Independent ad executive Ed Ackerley will be seeking a re-match against Mayor Romero. Last time in Nov. 2019 the vote was Romero, 55.9%, Ackerley 39.4%. Ackerley appears frequently on the John C. Scott radio show on Saturdays at 3 p.m.: https://www.kvoi.com/saturday. He is the uncle of Republican Chris Ackerley, a former one term AZ House legislator in former LD 2, now Deputy Pima County Treasurer.
And in Nov. 2019 Democrat Nikki Lee defeated Republican Michael Hicks for the Ward 4 Council office, but he has since died from the Covid-19 pandemic in Jan. 2021. Hicks had served on the TUSD Governing Board for 2 terms.
We can also work to turning Arizona more purple in 2024, so plan ahead.
I’ve featured the former B4AZ logo, but times have changed since 2014. The Dem donkey image has certainly evolved.
By the way, Independents don’t tend to get elected easily. Independent Val Romero just got elected to the TUSD Governing Bd. but that was a non-partisan 6 way race for 2 seats. And our former Democratic US Senator Kyrsten Sinema just changed to Independent and is up for re-election in 2024.
Deadline for nomination petitions for the City races is April 3, 2023. Stay tuned to see who else will be challengers to the incumbents in both the Primary and General elections.
And continue to check the Events calendar as I add to it daily.

Thank you dear readers and Dem friends for your nice comments and support. It truly gives me incentive to continue here at B4AZ. And it’s nice to feel appreciated after 9 years. On to the 10th.
Thank you for all you do, Carolyn.
If not for you, a lot of us would think nothing much is going on in Tucson.
Your work and devotion is very much noticed and appreciated.
Thanks Liza. I don’t think our readers realize that I spend a lot of time scanning websites, FB, emails for good, progressive events and movies to post. I try to have a mindset of which events in person or via zoom that our readers and friends would like to attend. It’s been fun these past 9 years but it was tough during the Trump years as there were often 4 or 5 events a day, literally, so I stayed up to midnight to spread the word about them. It’s so much easier now under President Biden and Governor Hobbs.
Thank you, Carolyn.
Thanks, my friend, for these articles. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, Carolyn–you not only write, but you SHOW UP at important events–and even routine meetings–all around the county. We really appreciate it.
Thank you all for your kind comments. Keep on blogging is my motto.
Thanks for creating your community Carolyn—and i feel comfortable saying that on behalf of all the progressive and liberal groups you highlight!
WOW! Happy Anniversary and thank you for your contributions~
Thank you!!!
