The latest unclassifiable cinematic creation from celebrated Swedish filmmaker Roy Andersson (A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence) weaves together multiple visually arresting vignettes into a powerful and infinite story of the vulnerability of existence. Making full use of the filmmaker’s patented wry, world-weary, often utterly hilarious worldview on the absurdity of our times, About Endlessness is constructed from interwoven narratives of various characters experiencing life as a series of poetic episodes. Through a series of brilliantly-conveyed images drift lonely figures searching for meaning: a pastor plunged into a crisis of faith; a psychiatrist closing his office to those in need in order to catch a train; a wan bureaucrat recalling an old childhood friend he thinks he has seen wandering the streets; the strange meaning of a women’s broken shoe; a couple floating Chagall-like over a city in ruins.    Philosophically punctuating these vignettes is an unseen narrator offering wistful observations of the state of human experience. It’s all imitable, unforgettable Andersson. (Dir. by Roy Andersson, 2019, Sweden/Germany, in Swedish with English subtitles, 78 mins., Not Rated)”

Carolyn’s note: My question is will this Pandemic ever end? It’s been over a year now since the initial shut downs in 2020 and despite all, 3 M have died worldwide, over 17,000 in Arizona. Maybe this existential movie will help us find peace as we wait….
