Arizona Democratic Leaders and Candidates across the Grand Canyon State issued statements on the second anniversary of the Dobbs Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v Wade.
Please read below.
Arizona Democratic Party Chairwoman Yolanda Bejarano:
“The freedom of what to do with your body belongs solely to Arizonas– not to Matt Gress, TJ Shoppe, Shawnna Bolick, Supreme Court Justices, and certainly not to Donald Trump. Democrats have always stood for protecting that freedom, while Republicans have time and time again shown they will do anything that Donald Trump tells them to do. Arizonans know that we are fighting for them and that is why we are prepared to win Democrats up and down the ballot in November.”
State Representative Nancy Gutierrez
“If Democrats were in the majority, the 1864 ban would have been repealed on one day. Republicans in the statehouse have shown time and time again that they are not fighting for Arizona values like freedom and protecting their democracy– they are constantly putting those things in jeopardy. It’s time Democrats were at the helm so that Arizona can continue moving forward towards progress.”
State Representative Consuelo Hernandez:
Two years ago today, we received catastrophic news that Trump’s Supreme Court stripped away our rights as women by overturning Roe. Thank you VP Harris for visiting us in Arizona again. As VP Harris mentioned it is crucial we elect Democrats up and down the ballot because our Reproductive rights, democracy, and humanity are on the line. We must elect @potus @vp and democrats this election.
Congressional District Three Candidate Yassamin Ansari:
“Two years ago today, the extremist, Trump-appointed Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade — a decision that has since compromised the lives, health, and well-being of hundreds of thousands of people across the country.
As a young woman myself and a former elected official, I knew this would devastate not only pregnant people seeking reproductive healthcare, but also physicians, pharmacists, and clinics. I led the charge to take action at the city and successfully passed an ordinance to de-prioritize enforcement of extreme abortion bans. In Congress, I will fight to restore reproductive rights once and for all.”
Congressional District Three Candidate Raquel Teran:

Congressional District One Candidate Marlene Galán-Woods:
“It’s been two years since the Supreme Court ruled to overturn a 50-year-old landmark decision, Roe v. Wade, that protected a woman’s right to an abortion. Since then, we have seen the Arizona Supreme Court uphold a civil-war era abortion ban. Thanks to the Democratic leadership of Governor Hobbs and Attorney General Kris Mayes, the 1864 ban was repealed – but Arizona’s 15 week ban is still in place. Elections matter and voters will prove this again in November when they vote out anti-abortion extremists like David Schweikert.
“As the only mother and grandmother in this race, I know what it’s like for our rights to be decided by politicians and it is unacceptable that my daughter and granddaughter will have fewer rights than I did. Our fundamental freedoms are not up for debate and a women’s right to choose should remain between patients, families, and doctors. In Congress, I will fight to codify Roe v. Wade into law and protect IVF and birth control.”
Congressional District One Candidate Conor O’Callaghan:
“Two years ago our country went backwards with the fall of Roe v. Wade. The biggest objective of the far-right’s 50-year strategy was finally and tragically achieved. Abortion is now banned at all stages of pregnancy, with hardly any exceptions, in 14 Republican-controlled states. In three other states, it’s barred after roughly the first six weeks. In Arizona, we’re still grappling with an 1864 abortion ban. This is wrong.
“I’m a lifelong Democrat. I never supported pro-life politicians and have always believed in a woman’s right to choose. When my wife, Tina, underwent a D&E procedure after a miscarriage we were given peace of mind because her health was no longer at risk. That same procedure is out of reach for millions of women now. I’m running for Congress because I will not allow this to be the future of our country. We must codify Roe v. Wade and protect reproductive rights everywhere.
“I am proud to have the most endorsers in this race – which overwhelmingly consist of women’s rights activists who have been champions for reproductive freedom. Together, we’re going to flip this seat in November, take back control of the House, and protect the women of this country. This is a solemn day, but there is hope on the horizon.”
