Arizona Legislators Discuss the Threat Project 2025 and the Trump/Vance Ticket Poses for Social Security and Medicare

At a Phoenix cafe event with Arizona Seniors, Senate Democratic Leader Mitzi Epstein, State Representative Patty Contreras, and Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans Executive Director Dora Vasquez discussed the threat posed by the Trump/Vance ticket and their policy blueprint Project 2025 toward the stability and viability of Social Security and Medicare.

A recent Center for American Progress analysis reported by writers at AZ Mirror found that Project 2025 would adversely harm seniors and everyday Americans with their proposals to:

  • Raise the retirement age.
  • Repeal the prescription drug benefit.
  • Eliminating out-of-pocket medical cost limits.
  • Families not making $10,000,000 a year would see an average tax increase of close to $3,000.00. Millionaires over ten million would get a $1.5 million tax cut.
  • Deny access to free contraception.
  • Making student loan recipients pay more per month.
  • Eliminating funding for Title One schools or, for those that do not know what Title One is, aid to schools that serve the nation’s poorest children.

What kind of Making America Great crap is this? How messed up is that?

At the event, Senator Epstein said on the Trump/Vance/Project 2025 designs on Social Security and Medicare:

“Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, have made crystal clear they won’t protect Social Security and Medicare – programs that 1.5 million Arizonans rely on. In fact, Trump and his MAGA allies want to take it further and make life even harder for seniors. Their Project 2025 agenda would cut Social Security benefits. Vice President Harris and Governor Walz are fighting to help Americans of every age, so each person in our country can not just get by, but get ahead.”

Representative Contreras also offered:

“On the one hand, we have Kamala Harris, who is fighting for issues we care about and creating progress for future generations. On the other hand, we have Trump, a wannabe dictator who would cause skyrocketing costs for seniors. In fact, with his Project 2025 agenda, Trump will explode the federal deficit by more than $5 trillion, which will be driven by massive tax handouts for corporations and the wealthy. And he plans to make up for it by cutting Social Security and Medicare.”

Executive Director Vasquez relayed:

“The two roads before us could not be more clear: we either elect Vice President Kamala Harris, who will support our older generations – or we send Donald Trump back to the White House to gut the earned benefits and health care millions of senior Americans rely on. Every Arizonan deserves to retire with dignity, especially after a long career contributing to your community. If Trump gets his way, Social Security and Medicare would be cut and health care costs and premiums would go up for all of us. Arizona seniors cannot risk another Trump term.”

Arizonan and American Political Operatives would do well to emulate Franklin Delano Roosevelt who made these remarks in 1936 mocking Republicans who say they would not do any damage to Social Security, unemployment aid, and housing assistance.

It was on point in 1936 and it is on point with the MAGA Trumpists and Project 2025 apostates trying to fool the American People today.

There is only one party that has historically proven over the last 90 years that they are the vanguard of social justice in the United States.

It is the party of Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Humphrey, Carter, Mondale, Clinton, Gore, Obama, Biden, and, if voters choose in November, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
