Ed. MDB: Just quick note here, in case you missed it, you can watch our fellow blogger Larry Bodine’s recent interview with Sec. Fontes on YouTube:
Going on a media offensive to protect voter access to mail in voting which American Duce Wannabe Donald Trump would like to unconstitutionally strip away, Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes appeared on several local and national outlets to protest the latest MAGA attempt to suppress the vote.
In a press release following his media appearances, the Secretary’s re-election team highlighted Mr. Fontes key comments including:
CNN News Central: “We are a federal republic […] there’s a lot of conservatives who oughta to be hopping mad at the notion that the executive of the federal government is going to try to exert power over the way that we govern ourselves […] I don’t work for the President, I work for the people of the great state of Arizona.” MSNBC – All In With Chris Hayes: “We’re going to continue to have elections in Arizona regardless of the outcomes. Keep in mind, Donald Trump got elected in Arizona because of mail-in ballots.” KTAR – Arizona’s Morning News: “Arizona voters do not take direction from the White House. We never have, we never will. We decide how we’re going to vote, so says the Constitution.” Fox10 News: “Arizonans love ballot by mail. For someone to come in and say you can’t do that anymore, Arizonans aren’t going to be pushovers like that.” AZFamily: “This is a state job, not a federal job, not the President’s job, and he should mind his own business.” 12News: “President Trump’s comments are false, inflammatory, and a direct violation of the U.S. Constitution. Mail-in voting has been a cornerstone of secure and accessible elections in Arizona for years. It was created by Republicans to help seniors, veterans, and rural voters.” Meet the Press Now: “There’s a reason they call him [Trump] TACO. This guy is nothing but a game show host and a salesman, and he needs to mind his own business. He doesn’t have the authority to do what he has threatened to do. This is an embarrassment for the United States of America.” |
The Secretary also issued a social media video today, defending mail in voting, saying:
“For decades, Arizona voters have depended on voting by mail. Now, President Trump is threatening to eliminate it. Not only is this unconstitutional, it would force hundreds of thousands of Arizona to wait in long lines on Election Day or a risk not having their vote counted. Sadly, Arizona is no stranger to long lines at the polls. In 2016, thousands of voters had to stand in long lines. Some waited as long as five hours to cast their ballot while others left without ever being able to vote at all. Now, imagine how long those lines would be if vote by mail were eliminated. That means you and many like you might have to stand in those lines. Voting by a mail is safe. It’s secure, and it works for everyone no matter your schedule, your ZIP code, or your community.”
