TUSD Superintendent Elizabeth Celania-Fagen will be leaving TUSD for Colorado's Douglas County School District, according to breaking news in the Star.
This is bad news for Tucson. Celania-Fagen is bright, capable and looked to be leading the district in the right direction, after years of leaders taking the district nowhere.
On the one hand, damn her for leaving when Tucson needs her.
On the other hand, who can blame her? Things will be going from bad to worse for Arizona's public schools, with no end in sight. If she has an opportunity to lead a district in a state that still supports its schools, she would be a fool to stay here and continue the thankless task of trying to move the district forward with dwindling resources.
I'll bet school districts all over the country are looking to cherry pick the best administrators and teachers from Arizona's schools. And I'll bet many of our best administrators and teachers are sending applications all over the country — especially those who still have a decade or two left in their educational careers. It's not hard for educators to read the writing on the blackboard, or the whiteboard if their districts had enough money to buy one.
And if my bet is right, Arizona's schools will have to cope with dwindling talent at the same time they're coping with dwindling funds. It ain't gonna be pretty.
