Biden/Harris Campaign, Engel, and O’Callaghan React to the Democratic Special Election Congressional Victory in New York

New York Congressional District (CD) Three is one of 18 battleground districts that Joe Biden won in 2020 that a Republican House Candidate prevailed in during the 2022 Midterms.

With the victory of Democrat Tom Suozzi in a special election last night (February 13, 2024) to replace the disgraced and criminally imperiled MAGA stalwart George Santos in that district, Democrats from the Biden/Harris Campaign and two Arizona Democratic Candidates in battleground districts CD One and CD Six reacted positively to the results, predicting that their parties problem solving and pragmatic progressive messages will carry the day in the November elections.

Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the Campaign Manager for the Biden/Harris team released a statement following the Suozzi victory, declaring:

“Donald Trump lost again tonight. When Republicans run on Trump’s extreme agenda – even in a Republican-held seat – voters reject them. As we saw in 2020, 2022, 2023, and now tonight, when it comes down to the choice between Donald Trump’s chaos and division and President Biden who wakes up everyday working to get things done and make Americans’ lives better, voters are consistently choosing the leadership of President Biden and Democrats. Trump and the MAGA extremists in the House are already paying the political price for derailing a bipartisan deal to secure our borders and fix our broken immigration system.”

Arizona 2022 CD Six Democratic Nominee and 2024 Congressional Candidate Kirsten Engel, fresh off penning an op ed critical of incumbent Juan Ciscomani putting Trump over country on the border issue, posted on social media:

Arizona CD One Candidate Conor O’Callaghan, seeing demographic similarities in his district, currently represented by ethically challenged David Schweikert, and Suozzi’s affluent Nassau County/Queens one, issued a statement,, offering:

“Just like we saw with abortion rights in Ohio, Tom Suozzi delivered a statistically resounding victory in a race that was projected to be very close.  Having lived in NY-03 for a time, it is quite similar to AZ-01 and this certainly augurs well for Democrats taking back the House next November.  It’s what we’ve been saying all along, moderate Republicans and Independents in AZ-01 are looking for a change and we need to offer them the right candidate and vision in November to finally make the leap.”

With MAGA Republicans, at the behest of their master Mr. Trump, retreating from acting on border security and offering pledges to work to nationalize bans on reproductive freedom and restrictions on women’s health, Democrats like the Biden/Harris Campaign, Engel, and O’Callaghan see a great opportunity to take back control of the House of Representatives, reelect Joe Biden, and possibly keep the majority in the Senate.

They are right to have this optimism as long as they realize they have to work to convince the people to support them like Suozzi did in this special election.
