Bill Mundell wants to:
- Help Arizona Families, Schools and Small Businesses.
- Move Arizona forward into the Twenty-First Century by expanding access Renewable Clean Energy access and affordability.
- Push Dark Money influence out of the Arizona Corporation Commission.
Mr. Mundell wants to accomplish these things by returning to the Arizona Corporation Commission (he was a Commissioner from 1999 to 2008 and its chair from 2001 to 2002) and represent Arizona Families over the Dark Money plutocrats that have influenced the fourth branch of the State Government over the last several years.
Running as part of the Solar Team with Shea Stanfield and Anna Tovar. Mr. Mundell wants to steer the Commission toward greater investments in sustainable/renewable energy resources like solar, halt the utility increases that have plagued Arizona consumers, and do away with the sway of Dark Money influences.
Mr. Mundell graciously took the time to discuss his candidacy.
The questions and his responses are below.
- Please tell the voters three reasons they should pick you for the Corporation Commission.
- “Arizona families and small businesses need to be protected from nonstop rate increases from politically powerful monopolies. I did that for nine years as a Commissioner. I served between 1999 and 2008 and was the chair of the Commission for two years from 2001 and 2002. I voted to reduce rates when it was appropriate, and I will do so again.”
- “I was raised in a military family and I was always taught to put country and community over self. I took that to heart and got involved with my community in Chandler after Law School (St. Mary’s University in San Antonio Texas.) As a young lawyer, I fought corruption in the Chandler Police Department and Court. At that time, the police were stopping people, mainly those of color, without probable cause and the Judge was dismissing cases of prominent people. As a result of fighting that corruption, I was appointed the Presiding Judge of the Chandler Municipal Court. I was then encouraged to run for the legislature and served for six years.”
- “I was the Chair of the House Environment Committee where I wrote numerous laws protecting Arizona’s environment including a historic law preventing Arizona from becoming the nation’s dumping ground for hazardous waste. Additionally, I wrote laws protecting Arizona’s rivers, mountains, and native plants. I was appointed, as noted above, to the Corporation Commission in 1999 and served for nine years.”
- “Commissioner Kennedy, who is the chair of my campaign, calls me “The Godfather of Solar” because in 2006 I coauthored the current renewable energy requirement in Arizona. My daughters made fun of me, so at first, I was somewhat embarrassed by the title but I like it now.”
- Please tell the voters at least two ways any of your opponents has failed the Commission.
- “I call Eric Sloan the “APS Four Million Dollar Man”. He was paid by APS in 2016 to spend millions in Dark Money to elect utility friendly commissioners who then voted to raise rates nonstop and crush rooftop solar installations.”
- “Marquez Peterson supported both the unjustified APS and UniSource rate increases. Prior to her appointment to the commission, she co-wrote a column with the President/CEO of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce, supporting the new unprecedented charges on customer’s bills. She even made fun of families for not understanding these new complicated electricity charges. As a Commissioner, she had an opportunity to rescind the APS unjustified rate increase but voted to keep it in place.”
- Please tell the voters at least three issues you feel are important to pursue if you are elected to the Corporation Commission?
- “As I indicated earlier, I want to protect Arizona Families from nonstop rate increases.”
- “I want to make Arizona “the solar capital of the world.”
- “I want to stop the Dark Money spending by the utility companies and their lobbyists that has resulted in the unjustified nonstop rate increases and the crushing of rooftop solar installation.”
- “Lastly, I want to strengthen the so-called code of ethics which has so many loopholes in it that you can drive a Mack Truck through it.”
- Is there anything you would like the voter to know about you or your candidacy that has not been asked in the first three questions?
- “Every citizen, whether they are a Democrat, Republican, Independent, or Libertarian, should be concerned by the undue influence the utility companies have on the Corporation Commission. This undue influence, as mentioned above, has resulted in the rubber-stamping of unjustified rate increases on families and crushing rooftop solar installations. I will stop that Dark Money spending by the Utility Companies.”
- “I am running on The Solar Team 2020 with Shea Stanfield and Anna Tovar. There are three seats open on the Commission. Please vote for all three of us so the Corporation Commission will work again for everyday Arizonans as the framers of our State Constitution envisioned.”
- “If the voters give me the honor and privilege of returning to the Commission, I will not let them down. I will fight for them every day.”
