Carmona running for Senate

by David Safier

The ground just shifted in the race to fill Arizona's open Senate seat now that Jon Kyl is retiring. Richard Carmona just got in the race.

“After talking with my family, my friends, and fellow Arizonans, I have decided to run for the United States Senate.  I will make a more formal announcement in the coming weeks.”

Carmona has a terrific story. I won't go into it here, but you're sure to hear more about it soon. That will help him get media coverage. Don Bivens, on the other hand, doesn't have much of a compelling story, unless he's been hiding it under a bushel. But Bivens is past chair of the Arizona Democratic Party. He's a longtime Dem, and Carmona is a newcomer.

Looks like we've got a Democratic primary on our hands. It'll cost the candidates some money, but it'll also give them visibility going into the general, where either Dem is going to have an uphill fight.

Don and Richard (and anyone else who wants to be a serious contender), start your engines.
