The month-long festival celebrates the food, music, art, and traditions of Hispanic culture, all integral to the very DNA of southern Arizona. The event kicks off with a Mexican Independence Day Concert at the Fox Theatre, hosted by the Consulate of Mexico in Tucson. To celebrate the holiday, on Sept.14-15 Pima County will light the Historic Courthouse dome with the colors of the Mexican flag.

“¡Viva Tucson! celebrates not only Mexico’s independence, but also that of other Latin American countries such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Chile, and Belize,” said Felipe Garcia, President and CEO of Visit Tucson. “I’d encourage locals and visitors alike to experience one or multiple events firsthand. No matter your heritage or ancestry, I guarantee you’ll learn something about others, and perhaps in turn yourself. After all, ¡Viva Tucson! is a celebration of not just Hispanic heritage, but the vibrance of humanity and Tucson’s strong sense of community.”

The Historic Courthouse will be a hub of activity throughout the month, with free concerts every Friday 11 a.m.  to 1 p.m. in the Courtyard and a free lecture on Sept. 23 by local historian Alex La Pierre, co-founder of Borderlandia.

“We are thrilled to have the Historic Courthouse be a part of the inaugural festival,” said Diane Frisch, Director of Pima County Attractions and Tourism. “¡Viva Tucson! offers an opportunity for all to celebrate the invaluable contributions of Hispanic culture to our entire community, and we are excited to see this celebration continue for many years to come.”

The event lineup at the Historic Courthouse includes:

Sept. 16 – Las Aguilitas de Davis Student Mariachis, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Already sitting in statewide positions on the AZ Corporation Commission are Republican Lea Marquez Peterson, appointed in 2019, elected in Nov. 2020, and Democrat Anna Tovar, also elected in Nov. 2020.  And City of Tucson’s Mayor Regina Romero is the first Latina and woman to serve as Mayor, as a Democrat.
