Charters of 6 St. Louis Imagine Schools revoked by state

by David Safier

This is being called the largest charter school closing in the country. The Missouri Board of Education is revoking the charters of six Imagine Schools in St. Louis because "the educational needs of more than 3,800 children were not being met." The six schools are among the lowest performers in Missouri.

This didn't come out of nowhere. The problems have been festering for years, and the St. Louis press has been diligent in pointing them out. Nor are the St. Louis schools an exception. Imagine Schools nationwide have been plagued with poor management, underfunding (because the for profit corporation sucks up the funds and doesn't return enough to run a decent school) and low student test scores.

Do we have similar problems with the 14 Imagine Schools in Arizona? No one really knows, because no one with journalistic chops (I'm not in that category) has seen fit to look into Imagine charters in the state.

IRONY ALERT: Here are the names of the shuttered St. Louis Imagine Schools.

  • Imagine Academy of Academic Success
  • Imagine Academy of Careers Elementary
  • Imagine Academy of Careers Middle
  • Imagine Academy of Cultural Arts
  • Imagine Academy of Environmental Science and Math
  • Imagine College Prep High School

Impressive sounding list of schools, don't you think?
