I'm a relative newcomer to Arizona — about 5 years — so I don't have personal knowledge of politics that goes further back than that.
Commenter Rex adds perspective to the issue of Horne's relentless attacks on ethnic studies. Horne needs to burnish his conservative credentials to gain support for his run for Attorney General. His one-two punch, fighting against ethnic studies and increased funding for ELL, helps him counter a serious problem he'll have with conservatives — he's not 100% anti abortion.
Our right-wing pals at Sonoran Alliance refer to Horne in this post as " Arizona's most prominent pro-choice Republican." With his battle against TUSD's ethnic studies classes, he is trying to reassure the Right of his conservative bonafides. Horne took the same approach when he first ran for state supe. The race-baiting campaign he ran against Jaime Molera and in favor of the proposition against bilingual education was shameless and self-serving.
