Common Ground

Steve Gall is for more exercise for kids. I'm for more exercise for kids.

And Tom Horne is for more exercise for kids as well.

"If I could require them to be physically active, I would," [Horne] said. "In the meantime, we have to give them a good attitude toward it."

The closest lawmakers came was last year, when both the House and the Senate adopted legislation requiring schools to provide 30 minutes of unstructured recess in grades one through six, in addition to the minimum 20 minutes students now get for lunch. But the measure got hung up over different versions and never became law.

I have to ask Steve, but I'm reasonably sure the recess bill is the one he promoted. I talked with Steve. That's the "mandatory recess" legislation he tried to help through the 2007-2008 legislature.

We've found common ground on one issue. It's nice to agree on something for a change.
