In his big screen follow-up to Mean Streets, director Martin Scorsese traded the tough turf of New York City for the dusty trails of Tucson, Arizona in this beautifully-constructed, emotionally-satisfying drama starring Ellen Burstyn in her Academy Award-winning role as single mother/diner waitress Alice Hyatt. After her husband dies unexpectedly, 35-year-old lounge singer Alice (Burstyn) and her bratty 12-year-old son Tommy (Alfred Lutter) leave their small New Mexico town, headed for California and an uncertain future. Along the way, Alice’s pursuit of broken dreams force them to settle in Tucson instead, where Alice lands a waitressing job at Mel’s Diner. While slinging hash and serving coffee, she befriends the sassy Flo (Diane Ladd) and meets and falls in love with a divorced farmer named David (Kris Kristofferson), which may change her dreams of getting back on the road to make it big as a singer in California. Featuring great supporting turns from future Taxi Driver co-stars Jodi Foster (as a tough-talking teen delinquent) and Harvey Keitel (as one of Alice’s not-so-nice suitors), Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore conveys a then-timely sense of strength and endurance from a single mother in hard times, winning Burstyn a well-deserved Best Actress Oscar, launching Scorsese’s major studio career and inspiring the hit ‘70s TV sitcom, Alice.
